They should if their two losses were to top 10 teams and not a 6-6 unranked team. They shouldn't be penalized the same for not winning against a ranked team as someone who lost big to a chump team.

I don't think they're a great team. But they are #9 I was using it as an example because a two loss GA will have losses to #9 and #1. If the choice for the #4 seat came down to 2 loss Ga or 1 loss OSU, I don't think it's right to penalize GA for the extra loss to the number 1 team in the country when OSUs lost to an unranked team.
If Alabama lost to unranked Citadel two weeks ago they would not be in the top 4. Bet your ass people would be screaming about how they shouldn't be given a seat in the playoffs because they lost to an unranked team and how overrated they are.

Georgia with 2 losses does not make it into the playoffs, unless Oklahoma and OSU both lose this weekend and then it would be between UCF and Georgia. I think it is very likely the only path Georgia has is to beat Alabama. If they do, Oklahoma, OSU and UCF are all shut out no matter what they do this weekend.

I understand that's how it works. I'm sayingn't it shouldn't. GA should not be penalized for being a two loss when they were to top 10 losses, one of them the number 1 team, over a team with 1 loss to an unranked team. IMO a loss to an unranked team should be weighted the same as 3 losses.
Honestly since ND is in and doesn't have a conference title game to jeopardize their chance it shouldn't matter who loses the Alabama v Georgia game. If there is 1 team in the top 4 without a title game, and two teams in the top 4 have to play each other in a title game. Then either the game shouldn't be held against them, or ND should be in serious jeopardy of losing their spot to a team in the outside looking in who wins their title.

I get it, however, to me I think the playoff should be should be the 5 major conference champions, no matter what their records, and one additional team that is highest ranked not in one of the 5 power conferences. First round of playoffs #1 and #2 seed have a bye week while 3 and 5, 4 and 6 play. Gets rid of almost all of the subjective selection. Win your conference and you are in, don't win your conference you are out. If ND wants to get into the playoffs either make sure they are the highest ranked non power 5 team of join a conference and win that conference title.

I don't necessarily disagree with that if we're forced to have a playoff system. Especially if 1&2 get a bye. I've never liked the Playofff format and still think it should be the top 2 based on computer rankings. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the BCS except the wet tissues produced by everyone because the SEC dominated it year after year. Like I said earlier I don't think a playoff determine who the best team is. You could play it 3 times and likely have different outcomes each time. Last year is a good example. The better team on the field was obviously GA. They just got caught on busted coverage and an accurate pass in OT.
Joe, I understand your reasoning with computer rankings deciding who the best team is based on statistics for the season, whatever those may be. what I don't get is that if we are going to have computers decide who is best after all the teams play out their schedules, then why even bother with number two? can't the computer just tell us who the best team is and give them the damn trophy and be done with it?

That would be a big fat NO! Think about all the money made by having these games, most likely in the billions.
Especially when busted coverage and an accurate pass in OT is an excusable offense. Gotta play the whole game. At the end of regulation/OT, the only thing that matters is who has the most points. And that's why they play the game.

And it will, that will be the #1 team, however I think you still have to put the 1 and 2 head to head to battle it out on the gridiron. There's finality in a championship game. But once you start going beyond that to 4 , 6, and 8 teams you're doing nothing more than introducing randomality and not necessarily determining the best team.
it is my firm belief that the purpose of college football is not to simply determine who the best team is every year. that is incidental. College football has grown to the gargantuan enterprise that it is today for a myriad of other reasons. the most important of which is money. billions of dollars.

Each school in the top 4 makes 6 million win or lose. ESPN pays 600 million a year for broadcast rights to the CFP, and charges 1mil per 30 seconds for commercials. That's contracted until 2026. Companies pay up to 20 million to name a bowl. Yuge money. Yuge.

That’s just TV. There is plenty more money made in merchandise, tickets, food and drinks, hotels, local economy, etc. you get the picture, it’s big bucks.

Win your division or conference and you are in, period. If that means a 10-2 or 9-3 team from the ACC or the Pac12 gets in over a 10-1 or 11-1 SEC or Big 10 runner up, so be it
So today, the only playoff spot that would be solidified is maybe Norte Dame over UCF. We would be waiting to find out if the other 5 spots would be filled by Texas or Oklahoma, Alabama or Georgia, Ohio State or Northwestern, Clemson or Pitt, Utah or Washington. That would make this weekend of conference championships really worth something and exciting across the country. Could you imagine Alabama losing to Georgia and being out but Utah beats Washington and is in. How great would that system be to watch? If basically expands to playoffs to at least 10 teams starting this weekend with the 5 conference championship games
