After I got done mowing at High Voltage acres today I checked my easy to get to spots for Chanterelles and actually found enough to bring home. Nice. And the very painful pinched nerves in my lower back and SI joint
must have gotten jostled around enough bouncing on the mower for an hour and a half to find their happy places. I can actually walk upright again now, mostly. And my cold shot was on the money, subsequent practice session went well, too. Things may be looking up. 😀

Looks likes black staining polypore mushroom. I have some on my place, ate some last year. Kinda fibrous, but sliced thin across the grain they were very good and not chewy or tough at all. I missed them by about a week this year.

went hunting today but didn't have to do much hunting. honey holes loaded with nice Chant's. I'll can most of these and eat on them for a few days, too. no bugs to speak of, and it was pretty nice in the woods.

Wow Jamie!!!! That’s a heck of a haul!! Do they typically favor certain sides of hollers or other features or do they grow everywhere?

they don't seem to be too choosey. I've got them on hilltops, hillsides, on creek banks and other low places, in the middle of mature woods and even on mowed trails. My honey holes where they are most abundant are in the bigger woods. I get these in the exact same places year after year when they are producing well. I don't have to look for them much as I go where I have always found them and they are usually there. An exceptional amount again this year. I'm not sure we've ever brought this many home at one time before. I'll post a pic of them spread out after we get them all washed. They are on fire in central Ohio right now. For as much rain as we've had, the woods was much drier than I expected. weird.

much appreciate the kind words, Bowkills. Spray up with deet and take a walk. I cannot explain why the bugs were not bad, but I expecte them to be horrible. I use a Therma-cell and permethrin and deet spray, but there just were not much mosquitos around, thankfully. I had hopes for some oysters or chickens, but we did not cover much ground at all because there were so many Chant's in the two areas we went to. I am sure that we have never brought this many home in one day ever. The size of these was, on average, bigger than normal. I didn't weigh them but I'd bet there are 25lbs of mushrooms here, and we spent less than two hours cutting them. ran out of counter space for drying them after washing. This was an epic day of shroomin'. :D
