In the dark last night I used my phone flashlight to throw a tarp over a pallet of firewood with rain on the way last night. Something caught my eye 10 feet away and I found these two flushes of what looked like HOTW. I texted a few people of my find and they confirmed my suspicions.
Can’t believe I had found COTW and HOTW within 20 yards of each other right next to our house. Lol

That's great! I have to drive an hour to my spot. I've searched all my nearby woods for years without finding them.

Curious as how yall cook them. I usually sautee in olive oil or butter. Also have you tried to freeze them?

I just plucked/cut petals off the small 5# flush of HOTW and have them spread out on two cookie sheets in freezer for another 30 minutes (2 hours total) then I’m putting them in freezer bags to freeze till whenever I want to fry up some. I’m taking some nice big bundles to bros tomorrow for us the dry in butter like Jamie suggested. Going to dredge in flour first and season with with a bit of Lawreys and pepper. Can’t wait!

That huge flush is still on the ground behind that stump. I’m going to work on it when I get back from Strouds.

Your yard this year has yielded more for your freezer than the last 3 years of hunting. Could you imagine if Cinderella left the house? 😳

These mushrooms are growing in small to large clumps completely around this huge oak tree. Have no idea what they are as I’m not trained in the fine art of ‘shrooming. My luck they’re delicious and I have no idea how to prep.
They are hen of the woods(maitake). Do some back reading on this thread. If you have never tried these, you need to.

Well, I shoulda made it more of a priority to harvest this HOTW asap but I had other stuff on my plate lately. I was also gone the past 4 days and when I went to check on it today a lot of it started looking a bit dry. That didn’t stop me from plucking out the nice amount that was still fresh, soft and moist looking. I rinsed it really well and froze the pieces on cookie sheets for a few hours and I will put them in freezer bags for later.

I kept forgetting to post right after taking pictures but back on 1/3/24 I flipped the tarp off a portion of the firewood stack and found several clusters of these mushrooms/ears growing off several pieces of wood. They were very soft and clean and looked like pheasant backs or Elephant ears. They’ve since froze up and are of no use but I’m wondering if any of you here know what these are and if they were edible and if so, tasty?

Those are Oyster mushrooms, and look very, very nice. They are very good to eat, and I have brought them home frozen this time of year, let the thaw and found them to be quite fine to eat still. sauté in butter until golden brown with a little s&p. We found two flushes of them a few weeks ago when I went down to Brocks to squirrel hunt. I have found them several times in December and January while squirrel hunting.
