2025 Rut Report

Glad somebody can see a Diddy party in OH.

Athens
2022-EHD
2023- Hard Drought
2024-Record Drought
2025- Drought and Record EHD

The real concerns changing bounce back time to me are the: new weather pattern and hunter behavior. While EHD is pocketed, you'd have to be one ignorant fug to be shooting does right now....and there are. The local low standards shitbag outfitter and others have no problem shooting anything within crossbow range...the shortsightedness will just push that rebound date all farther out until "never" due to ignorance. At some point, the "hunters" need to have accountability ....not sure if everyone is waiting for the ODNR to do something way too late or will just call it quits when there are no deer left
You are right. $850 an acre

Took my daughter to school, a pair locked and laying right next to the road in the wide open. on the way back by they finally stood up when I stopped for a quick pic. If they aren't waiting on doe to breed theyll be looking for the next one in nw oh.

Buck and doe were on their feet at day light roughly 2-3 hundred yards from this position. They made their way slowly and laid down here for the day. Didn't move from that spot much at all. They both got up around 445. He mounted her twice in twenty minutes or so. He went about fifty yards away fed for a few minutes and came right back and they both laid back down. Nearly dark now and they just stood back up but not moving. I wouldn't doubt he's still with her or defending her somewhere in the morning. Some bucks dash after breeding some breed them like it's the last piece they'll ever get. Some are aggressive and will beat at the crap out of a doe to get them to breed but most cases I've watched in this field over twenty years are all day events like this.

I had one of the young does wander thru 8 days ago. Her fur was ruffled up. She was alone. Probably first breeding cycle based on her size. I suspect she was a victim of hit it and quit it. She was doing the walk of shame back to her girlfriends. I can hear one of them already "Um um um girl. I told you he was bad news." 🤣

I'm guessing the first ones get beat up pretty good like that. bucks seem get right to it towards the end of rut or second cycle when fawns come in when they're the only thing left to hump for the year. I'd say more occasions I've witnessed they get mounted more than once. it might be different in higher doe populated areas than here. Less opportunities with more competition got make sure it sticks.
