Could be. I just assumed August death from EHD. Stunk of death down there when I walked the are in August

We are avid mushroom hunters, I decided I wanted to try shed hunting this year. Any pointers for a newby? My husband stumbled on this find by accident. But now I’m very curious on finding others!

First off, welcome!
Second, nice find and welcome to new found hobby.
Third, that is a dead head and needs to be treated a little different then a shed. If you need more info on this, I’ll be happy to share more. If you already handled it right and have paperwork, thumbs up and go find some more!
Fourth, stick around for the yearly mushroom thread. It should start at the end of the week, IMO.
