Made it out to the tree to watch the sunrise. Saw two doe, and four young bucks. The big red fox-looking coyote made his way past too, but out of range. That guy has been around for three seasons now. Should get a shot at him one of these days.

Back out in the morning.

Sat until 10 or so this morning. Only saw one deer, another small buck. I took pics with my phone as he was standing in front of my trailcam...which I put out the other day in hopes of seeing a big old buck that is missing in action. :( Another nice sit, just not much action.

The blob in the tree is me!

I sat in a new stand location at a creek crossing this morning. At first light a young buck crossed the creek and came right under my stand. About 750, a doe and a yearling crossed the creek downstream, and downwind of me. They never looked my direction. A little later, I heard deer splashing and turned to see the last of at least two crossing the creek again. Not a bad morning, though I saw nothing big, and none of the deer I saw appeared to be all that excited about anything. Last Thursday there were bucks chasing all around me. Today was kinda slow. I did see a dandy standing in the cut bean field behind my house when I arrived home. I suspect he has a doe laying in the ditch. Seems to me like there is a bit of lockdown going on. Pretty sure the 13th will be as wild as it gets if the weather cools back down. Lots of good hunting left!

I set the alarm, and promptly shut it off this morning. I'm just wore out and have to be at the pizza shop by 1030 anyway. Still, I woke up for good by 630, shoulda just went hunting. Today was probably the day. :)

Dang Brock, guess your body is telling you to take a little break.

Maybe so, Dan. I plan on taking Mason out tomorrow. With warmer temps rolling in I've tried to convince him we need to drag the boat down to the lake and hunt down some feesh...he doesn't seem to thrilled with that idea. I think he has deer on his brain! :) I did move one of his stands the other day, and think it's in the "money spot" now. Certainly would be if that good looking 8 point strolled through the same area as he did the three times we've seen him!

Mason and I only saw two bucks. One of them was the 8. No shots at either deer. Kinda slow up there right now.

I let Mason take his bow for the very first time tonight. I am confident in his shooting now, and more importantly he is! We saw five deer, all antlerless and all in the last half hour or so of light. Had a good time and don't have a dead deer to fool with. (99)
Going out in the morning if it isn't raining.

What a morning!

It started pouring down rain just before I arrived at the farm. I sat in the truck for 10 minutes wising I hadn't got out of bed, then the rain let up a little. I took off, made the 3/4 mile hike to my stand and climbed aboard. The rain came back, along with gusting winds that nearly put me out of the tree! I started thinking about how dumb I was... then I saw a deer coming and felt a little better about my predicament. Turned out to be a pretty decent buck. 125ish, 10 point. I snapped some pics, and let him stroll on. Sent one of the pics to KR so she could show Mason before he got on the bus. He was mad that I didn't shoot the buck as he thought it was plenty big enough. :)

About 830, I was texting my buddies in WI and TN when I looked up and saw a couple of deer. I quit texting, and after a few minutes one of the deer left the other and headed my way. As it came closer, I saw that is was a buck I wanted to kill. I recognize this deer (I think) from two years ago. He was an 8 with 13-14" G2s, now he's a ten! I'm certain he will go over 170!!!! He walked right down the fence row to me, but turned into the field instead of continuing down the line. I drew on him...44 yds. I was swaying around in the tree and felt pretty sure I couldn't make the shot, even though he was squarely in the middle of the opening I planned to shoot a deer in... just not with 30 mph wind gusts! I let down, and it killed me to watch that deer walk away from me.

After he was out of sight and into another woods, I climbed down and took off trying to get to another stand on the back side of that woods at a creek crossing. Shortly after getting settled, I saw a big buck cross the creek about 200 yards downstream from me, but I don't know if it was him or another big boy. My binoculars were stowed safely away due to the rain.

I plan to hunt this evening, which is something I rarely get to do. The intensity of the early rut may be winding down, but the big boys seem to be out looking, finally! GET IN A TREE!

BTW, my buddy in WI killed a dandy this morning, and my buddy in TN killed a nice one yesterday. Both following does!

This is the buck I passed this morning. I wish I had pics of the big one from this year, but I wasn't about to snap any when I thought I was gonna kill him!

Man, sounds like an awesome hunt Brock! That buck there has a pretty good sized body on him. Hope you get another encounter with the big boy! Living vicariously through you today! Get 'er done!
