I do, also read up on it last night. Inconclusive at this time. 500+ cases out of thousands and thousands of dogs. I will change if something conclusive comes out.

Reading up on dog food to figure out what’s best for our love ones, trying to pick a good quality of dog food is mind boggling to say the least.

Make sure your pups get treated for heart worms. We thought Reese was protected and found out today that she wasn’t, because she has heart worms...not sure how we missed this, but it’s about to cost her some down time and us some money. It’ll make you feel pretty terrible. Very avoidable situation.
Once your vet cures your dog of heart worms, put them on a regular heart worm medication. My wife uses heart guard. It’s a chewable and it even comes with little heart stickers that you put on the calendar as to remind you to give them the chewable every month. Hope your pets get well soon.

Giles are you talking about the lab or another dog? I’ve been using ivermectin for years (do not give to collies). Once a month by mouth and I will never use the 35$ bottle before it expires in four years. You have to know the weight and dosage. It’s the active ingredient in all heart worm medicines. Never give straight to mouth as dogs don’t care for the taste and can irritate the throat. I usually soak on some bread. Hope your dog has a speedy recovery.

Funny I was reading a thread the other day about heart worms and treatments. Some were claiming the vet treatment was overpriced joke. They kill the adult worms with same heart worm medicine. Definitely over priced. Also rabies vaccinations are good for 3-5 years but they give it every year. Most states mandate it. Wonder who lobbied that law?

It’s the chocolate lab we have. I think she’s around 2.5 now.

That sucks. Do y’all have mosquitos bad up there? They can be horrible down here. Only takes one infected mosquito I’m told.

Funny thing is strays run around without any treatment and they never seem to have problems. Can yotes get heart worms?

Dave also you have two labs now right? Go to the feed store and ask for ivermectin. It’s a pig and cow wormer. Tell them you intend to use it for heart worms for your labs. They will know the correct dosage per pound. Give once a month.

For the record, I have been using this for over 20 years. My dogs have never had heart worms or intestinal worms, nor any puppies that we have whelped.

As for the food issue Pearl is scheduled for her yearly at the end of the month and I will ask my trusted vet about dog food. I’m curious to know their view on the food I’m feeding.

We’ve got [emoji3082] nothing like Alaska, but we’ve got enough to be annoying. Like you said though, only takes one.

A short story about mosquitoes. We have them bad most times when I lived on a brackish water marsh. When the sun set they will darken the windows on the house until dark then they are just a couple bothering you at dark.

Well my buddy that lives in sw la, wanted me to come bow hunt with him and said the skeeters are bad. I laughed at him and said they couldn’t be any worse than where I live. Boy was I wrong. His area has lots of rice fields and the refuge was a fresh water marsh.

I arrived there and when sundown came they were bad. After it got dark they didn’t let up. Basically couldn’t be outside. They never let up until the sun came up good the next morning. I don’t like to be wrong but I was dead wrong. I used two thermacells and also put on 99% deet and they still bothered me.

I’ve watched hunting shows that was in Alaska and Canada and they looked horrible at times on video. I’m sure they were worse than you could see on video.

Yup, and with no real dark...they feed all day! Head nets are a must in some places. Alaskan state bird 🦟

As for dog food, for what it’s worth, when I attend ukc sanctioned hunt test, they give you a 2# bag of dog food. It’s Purina pro plan sport. I’m assuming it’s the food the ukc enforces. Seems like good food and cheaper than my food.

This food is 30/20 protein/fat so most likely should be used for working dogs as they need the extra to maintain health. A house dog wouldn’t require that high of content of protein and fat.

I tell you though, it’s all becoming high dollar food. I used to feed purina way back in the day. Then I migrated to science diet. Now days there is a special formula in most brands. I’m sure the food is better as competition makes each one improve so they stay in business. I also believe that some are better than the others. I’m not a grain free person but thought it was the new and improved thing. I have been feeding my dog Tastes of the wild. It’s expensive, but my dogs coat shines like a new penny. Don’t over eat and seems to be doing great on it. Now the advisory comes out and I’m second guessing my decision. This really pisses me off as I want to provide my dog the best that I can afford. And if it’s true I’ve been paying more to harm my dog. I’m not sure grain free is for me any longer. If she develops an allergy that may change.
My dogs bring so much fulfillment in our lives, how can I not try to do the best for them?

You’re a good daddy![emoji16]

She’s my baby. Loves me like no human could. I have a special place in my heart for dogs....cats, well not so much.

I have a lot of money, sweat and time invested in my dog. Way more money than I ever dreamed of. Will be getting her tested for the various health issues also real soon. By next year I will have invested close to 7k. I’m sure there’s other monies spent, just like with hunting and gear but whose counting.
