I just havent figured out how to tell the difference between a 2yr old and a 5yr old until I have them on the ground putting my tag on it.
Being my first year, if it has a beard it is going down. I would rather not kill a jake. Guess i will find out if I can hold out when the time comes.

If you want to.kill a turkey, go get a blind , sit along a green field and you'll probably get one. I have zero intrest hunting Turks that way. If you want the ultimate experience and challenge, get in the timber, roam the ridges / hollows and hunt one down. That's the only way ill.hunt them.
I appreciate the input Mountaineer. Here lies my problem with your suggestion: Big woods timber around here consists of 20acres. Most of our wood lots are 5-15 acres and not all of them hold turkeys. This time of the year does not allow me to break away for a couple days to travel to hunt them. I will be lucky to sneak away for a morning or two locally (per week). Even at this, there are limited areas which hold turkeys.

Phil, if there are turks around your area and they haven't been hunted much then it shouldn't be that hard to whack one as long as you are patient. Find some birds, don't call too much, use decoys, and don't move too quick. Also, if you don't get one the first time or 2 out don't get discouraged, there will be a day when you catch one in the right mood and he will come right in.
Lima. In NW Ohio. Flat as a pancake. Only elevation change is if you drive out to the reservoir and climb up the side of it. Neighborhoods, small towns, and farm fields. Not terribly far from Gern in "the NW Tundra". ahaha

Ohh man..didnt realize that. That fragmented habitat type hunting is tough but can hold alot of birds...Most times when they pitch down out of the trees they sail way out into the middle of some field out of reach. Very frustrating.
