Considering I killed my first bird with a Primos Sonic Dome, I'll roll with it. But I'm far more versatile and effective with a Primos Jackpot slate call...

I LOVE the Jackpot slate. Simple to use and it is the call I sound by far the best with. I will stick with that.

Mike...

You ask your lil buddy morrett about Sanderson slate calls...He will know.

Matt won the world friction calling contest 5 times and I believe he was running a Cody. I picked up one of Jerry (Sanderson's) calls years ago...excellent woods call.

I don't really have a favorite call. Some years I'll run nothing but diaphragms and some years it's just friction. I really like the Woodheaven diaphragm calls although I picked up a couple Hendershot split v's at the expo that sound about as good as I can make a mouth call sound. The one call I really struggle with is a box. I own a drawer full of them and like the way they sound in the house, but for whatever reason, on a cool damp spring morning I can't run one to save myself.

Those are some great sounding diaphrams. I have two of them but they're both old and dried out now. I've been thinking about getting a couple more because I believe Zink is no longer making them... Although, Grossenbacher told me a few weeks ago that they still have a bunch sitting around in their shop that are for sale. Cabelas has them on clearance for around 5 bucks right now.

What movie quote? Well, given your location, I only have two guesses: Deliverance, or Dumb and Dumber. :smiley_crocodile:

Its taken me years upon years to perfect my style of using the box. My best streak with the box was 13 times entering the woods..13 gobblers.

For me, its my edge when i enter the woods..No other hunter sounds like me or has the same rythem. When you give them Gobblers something different, they respond without suspicion. Everyone needs an edge. Thats the key.

I think I will be alright. They were in full strut and gobbling away 2 weeks ago. As far as I know there has never been anyone hunt turkeys on this property. I am thinking if I toss some decoys out there, throw out some gobbles, clucks, purrs, farts, grunts, or whatever, then I will have the edge. I think those toms will be out looking for a receptive hen. Having never been pressured, I am feeling pretty good based on how dumb you guys say they are. Guess i will learn soon enough. Either I will succeed or be humbled. Either way, I will learn something I suppose.

Dont go with high expectations, I may sound like I do but in actuality its gonna be extremly tough hunting. By the end of the week, i may put on 30 or so miles up and over the ridges and hollows of S. ohio.

Hicks...just have fun.

Mountaineer,

You keep telling us how good you can run a box call, but have never shown us or let us hear it......can't you come up with an audio file or some type of video for us?

I am dying to learn how to work a box.......:smiley_crocodile:

If i show everyone, then they will adopt my technique. I will then loose my edge. :)

Oh right... 'Cause then everyone in Ohio would start calling like you, completely ignoring what they've successfully been doing for years. C'mon man. lmao

When used correctly, the box is the most effective call in the woods. Most folks who run the box cannot mix up the calling. It took a longtime but ive figured out how to run the box so i can mix up different notes..purr followed by quick putts followed by a few yelps...The key is rythem and mixing up the notes so they slide and run together that makes sense.
Ive also learned that when i run the box it sounds much better at further distances..The closer the bird the less i use it except for putts and purrs.

here's an example..But im alittle to close to the vid cam..If i was much further away, i would sound better. However..i did call in 2 doves. :)
