Its not the kind of place to screw around that's for sure. If you leave the road you better have onX, a backup compas, a light and a plan to be back on a forrest service road before dark. Navigating out of a cypress swamp in the dark is misery, even with a light. Without Onx or a compas you might as well make camp and wait for daylight to get a directional bearing. I challenge any woodsman here to hold a heading for 400 yards through it, I'd put money on it everyone would walk in a loop. Everything is different and tou can walk for miles without an elevation change or terrain difference, it all looks the same and at the same time different from different angles. You can look at a spot ahead of you, step 5 paces to the left or right and look at the same spot and it'll look different. On an overcast day like this morning you're screwed without some way to check your heading. I have an exceptional internal compas in big woods, in a cypress swamp that all goes out the window if I don't have the sun.How many hog hunters come up missing I wonder ....
