Garden Updates Thread

Little early for me. Each strain is a little different. I cut one open TOO see if they are ready. I like mine to get bigger so that they have a big enough cavity TOO stuff.

They were so crowded in there I thought it might help the others by giving them some room TOO. Is that normal to have that many jalapenos on one plant? Here is a picture of one of the others so ya can see what I mean. The one plant I picked off of was a lot more crowded than this one.

Garden....it's whats for lunch.

Looks good Beener.
I am trying to "juice" my jalapenos up a little and I remember dad using horse manure on his hot peppers and horseradish so I decided to start "fertilizing" mine. I got 3/4 of a five gallon bucket of horse manure from a buddy of mine at work and then filled the bucket with water. I let it brew for a couple days and then started watering with it Wednesday night. Of course the water was black as all get out and looked like it oughta make something grow. I don't think it's something I wanna water the peppers with every night but I figure a couple times a week won't hurt. Do you guys/gals think that's too much, not enough, or just right? Would appreciate your opinions. I definitely don't want to burn them up.

I water once a week with liquid fertilizer. Twice a week with manure/water shouldn't hurt. Just watch the plants and if you have any color changes then cut back.

I gave up on my "garden". 8 out of the 10 squash plants died. 2 bloomed, but no fruit. I have one tomato growing that is about the size of a grape.

Highly disappointed to say the least, but I am going to try it again next year. This time, I'll be ready and have it planted as soon as possible, rather than the last day of June. :smiley_blackeye: :smiley_baby:

Dang that sucks. Sorry to hear Diane. No luck with the straw bale tomatoes, or is that the one tomato you are saying is the size of a grape?

It is the straw bale tomato plant that has the grape sized tomato on it. The straw sure grew a bunch of grass, just not vegies!

I did get a couple of 3 tomatoes off of my tomato plants that are in pots on the front porch, so at least I got a grilled cheese with fresh garden tomato sandwich this year.

Sorry to hear about your garden, Diane. It sounds like you need some soil prepping. Try sowing some rye this fall, for a cover crop. Maybe some lime and or manure.

However, my garden has been producing like wild fire. I get 3-6 maters everyday, green beans every other day.y corn should be ready to pick next week. I plan on starting to make salsa and pepper mustard this week. Fun and always enjoyable make a mess in my wife's kitchen! Lol.

I gotta agree with ya Ron, about the soil prepping. I would get out in the garden next spring, at tilling time, and broadcast granulized lime and 12-12-12 on the ground then till it under. That's what I did with my spot this year and its a brand new spot, never a garden there before. It's amazing how much a difference lime can make. I have even taken a soil sample of a prospective garden spot and dropped it off at the ASCS office before and they will do a soil test for ya for free and tell ya exactly what your garden spot needs. One thing I have seen is no matter where I have taken a sample from the results have came back every time telling me to add lime. And honestly you can't hurt anything by adding a little lime anyway. I sure hope ya get it figured out and things are better for ya next year Diane.

I did plan to do that. I'll also try the lime, etc. Thanks

Got tired of repairing soaker hoses and installed irrigation today. Cleaned up some weeds and took some pictures. Our tomato plants are crazy out of control producing! Peppers are also coming on like a wild fire!

Nice Phil! I pulled all my cucumber vines Tuesday night. They did really well this year, 53 cukes off of 3 plants! Tomatoes are still going strong and my peppers are coming on really good. The wife made some really good tomatoe, cucumber, and onion salad the other night. Just take those and cut them up, add Italian dressing and ground basil and parsley. Good stuff!

"To the top". Phone is jacked up and I haven't uploaded photobucket to it yet. So in order to find this post I looked it up on the computer and then brought it to the top. From Tapatalk I cannot post pictures on an edited post. Weird. I don't know. Not a techy guy. Wanted to post from my phone and that was how I knew to do it. lol

Beener- Our tomato and pepper plants are just starting to come on strong. I don't know why other than the fact the garden got away from us early. When we took it over again I applied another round of compost and they kicked butt. Our weeding and watering were more diligent and we are going to be flooded with maters and peppers real soon. Unfortunately, our apples are going to be ready about the same time. My wife is going to be pulling her hair out canning.
