Let's talk tires ( again!)

I’m getting new tires for my Chevy 2500 duramax this spring. I’d like to get a tire that is more aggressive in the mud, but am concerned about the noise on the highway and tread wear. I got stuck in deer camp this year with all of the rain we had....and it wasn’t even deep mud...just zero traction.

Doesn't take much to break loose with the higher torque. Are you still running stock LTXs?

I changed it up with some Fun Country's about two years I ago I think and they have not let me down off the pavement on my Duramax. Road noise is more than I prefer but they have handled and towed well.

Ended up getting a good deal on a set of BFG KM3 265 75 R16. A bunch of the guys i work with have bfg km2 or km3 on their 4runners, fj cruisers and tacomas. They seem to wear extremely well for a m/t. Everyone told me to put the 265 75 r16 on it because they fit the stock trd tacoma and are a little wider taller tire. I didnt believe them entirely until after i drove it. Sure enough they fit great. I mounted then myself on base at the auto hobby center. I will probably just pay someone to due that in the future. Mounting the tires wasn't terrible, but i don't think it was really worth my time compared to the 40 bucks I saved. So far the bfg km3 is behaving very nicely on road. They dont seem to be any noisier than the revo 2 a/t tires I had on the truck previously. I will probably go romp around saturday on some state land. I wanted to go today but it is at toyota getting new leaf springs as part of a recall. If they want to put new leaf springs on an eight year old truck I won't complain.

I took the LTX’s off, put a lift on and got bigger tires, but they are all terrain and ain’t cutting it. Here’s a pic of the truck stuck at camp...very frustrating that you can get stuck in 4wd in a grassy area.

Yeah, that right there will cause a man to freak out a bit. Road tires need to stay on the road! Put them on a heavy truck and they ain’t worth a thing off pavement. Wheel spin and cleaning out those pigs is another thing. Next time turn off your traction control or put it in low range.

I’m a low range guy off road when it’s wet or snow.

I went with Duratracs this time. Had too good of a deal to pass up. More road noise than the BFG AT TA KO and I lost 1.6 mpg from the OEM Contenental highway tires, but happy with them for the past month.

Mileage loss may be due to winter fuel blends. Our mileage on all vehicles goes down around November ish.

The Duratracs are a good tire. Performed flawlessly on my Jeep.

Believe it or not I run a pretty off brand tire called Haida. Absolutely love them though, not bad highway noise, get about 50k miles out of them and they look and perform well. I have 35x12.50x20s on my truck. They’re an r/t but so far in my 2wd f150 she does well in the mud and off-road. But she hates the snow she’s been a spoiled bitch her whole life in Florida gonna be time for a 4wd soon

Open Country AT3. Just turned 10,000 miles on them. Extemely quiet for a tire of this size. Traction seems fine so far. Wear seems very minimal.

Dave, I ended up going with the cooper discoverer ATP from discount tire. I've only put around 5000 miles on them 2000 with the camper behind I'd guess. Can't say much on longevity with so little miles, but traction has been good along with the ride and low noise. In short I've been happy with them. The biggest problem I've found is they are a rock magnet and they hold them for a while.

On my second set of these since this post. I managed 48k on the first set with a good rotation plan and aired down when not towing heavy.

I've been happy with them so far. I'll be curious how a more normal size acts. Hard to judge with a tire of my size, width and how far they stick out. Lol
