No rain in short-term forecast and woods are dry. I left a lot today that were to dry to keep. Season might be on its way out in SE Ohio. Weather never seems to cooperate if we had rain last few days we'd have GIANT yellows.

So that's what you call your rotting elm box lol jk

I ran into a guy in Coshocton that did just that. Had a box (much bigger than the one in BS' box) full of soil, elm bark and topped with stray. Cagey bugger but finally said that he used it to grow morels. Wouldn't explain how but he had 8 of them that I could see. Me moved them around with a front loader. Puts them out with the right weather and waters if need be.

He had a buyer at the North Market that was paying him $38 a pound last year. I had always heard you couldn't grow morels but didn't really believe that. You can grow anything once you know what it needs.

How interesting, Charles. The high demand for Morels, some people will pay 30-40 bucks a pound. It's a great idea, just wished I knew how. If it was just a matter of gathering elm bark and some soil, I would try it. It's my understanding, that the roots of the tree itself, is what disperses the spores? Thanks for posting that tid bit.

There is a site called: The Great Morel They have a section on growing tips. They also have a mess of pictures of finds that will make you sick! lol...........rotflmao

Yeah, he didn't really explain. I just saw the elm bark and straw. The beds were about a foot deep.

I found some more today, a handful of greys from a different part of the farm. That part of the farm gets less sun and the undergrowth was behind the other parts of the farm in terms of growth and the soil was visibly moister as well. My mother in law stated that part of the farm (she grew up on it) was always the later part for mushrooms.

I know someone who bought one of the "morel logs" you plant and supposedly then get morels from for the next few years. He was unimpressed to say the least. Yes morels are expensive if you buy them. I came across them in Kroger in Dayton last fall and they were >$45 a lb and didn't look very fresh. Also, most Krogers have dried morels and its like $10-15 for 4 oz of them.

Here is my ONE for the year. Pretty much where I figured I'd find 'em out near my shed. Kinda cool that it popped up next to my ground blind which is right behind the shed. For those that might wonder, that black wire is the dog's electric fence wire.

I cant wait to get out on tues and wednesday this week, Im gonna try to fill up a few kroger bags full.

I am impressed with your mushroom and shed hunting abilities Seth. Your well rounded and have a great eye for all the good things, laying hidden in the brush. Guys like you, inspire me to hunt even more. Keep posting your finds! Thanks.

Thanks much, I spend a lot of time out in the woods, its my life. I still learn new things every day, but the more time spent out there the better my luck seems to be. I certainly hope to post some good pics this week.
