We eat a lot of deer in my house....Well I take that back...We eat a lot of dead wild animals at my house. Jesse can vouch for that...between duck, deer and various other critters, we eat wild game 3-4 nights a week. For example, last night I just had deer burritos!

Same here, I bet we eat deer at least twice a week. My wife even made the comment the other day that she doesn't really like beef any more. She says it has a beefy taste. LOL rotflmao

Just finished up lunch, a marinated backstrap filet, bacon wrapped and charcoal grilled. Coworkers can't believe I actually eat "deer meat"! :)

My wife won't touch deer meat, she just can't get over the thought of it. I told her one of these days i'm going to blind fold her or mix in deer in the place of hamburger and she will probably not know the difference. Especially in taco's or something that you mix in seasoning with.

Now straight deer burger, I'm not a big fan. Gotta mix it with some sausage or something.

That is better than any restaurant steak right there!

I can yell ya that is around the time they "Changed" there method of estimating deer population..The newer method increased population about 110,000 just by changing the method:smiley_confused_vra..I found that interesting

Interesting read from 2004 that talks about herd estimate calculations/models...

http://www.gameandfishmag.com/2010/10/05/hunting_whitetail-deer-hunting_oh_aa103904a/

On paper the herd grew by 110k with a change in population estimates...

Here is a portion of the article:

"DOW biologists began using a new method of estimating the deer population last year that indicated there were more deer than estimates by the previous method had suggested. The population had been calculated to be 575,000 deer going into the 2002-03 seasons, but using the new method, that number was adjusted to 685,000 deer.

The new method of estimating the deer population incorporates the total deer harvest in each county, along with birth rates, into models that project population size. The previous method used data primarily from the gun-hunting season."

;) ...

The local WO was at my sportsmans club meeting. He talked a little about deer numbers. He said at a recent meeting Tonk said that only 3 counties were within 25% of goal population. 85 counties were over the goal pop by at least 25%.

Columbiana county, with a 19% harvest decline, was between 25% and 50% over goal population.

Don't know if people saw this or not when Sam posted it...

If true And personally I don;t doubt it, this would put our harvest numbers once the additional 25% goal is reached at 164,774 total harvest...

which is below the harvest in 1995 of 179,543
And around the harvest in 2001 of 165,124

Funny, I just went to the ODNR press releases to look up some of the previous year's final tallies and couldn't find them. Ifn I was the suspicious type I might think they were removed so we couldn't compare previous years.

And by the way Sam.. You're right... Since you said this Huntin2 and myself have both noticed many things are now missing... I download and bookmark every tidbit I find.. I don;t need them but lots of my bookmarks no longer work. :) Good thing I'm a pack rat. :)

I wouldn't mind at all if we had a similar harvest to 1995...I just wish we had a similar herd as we had in 1995! It was nice seeing deer.
