ODRN to regulate coyote hunting?

Actually, he’s not a biologist. The writer just used that term as a generalization. But I can’t say I disagree with anything he was quoted saying. What did he say that was off base?

“When I see a coyote, I’m happy to see it. That means we got a good ecosystem going, we’ve got predators in the area. That means there are plenty of other animals that are there or those coyotes wouldn’t be around.”

This does’t align with my understanding of a good ecosystem. The ODNR has been saying for years the coyotes aren’t native to Ohio. That they are an invasive species, which is why they didn’t regulate the hunting of them. Since coyotes showed up fox have about disappeared, not sure if it’s more because they compete for the same food sources or because yotes kill fox.

I’ve personally never heard anyone call a coyote an invasive species. They’ve been around on this continent longer than many other species. Thicker in some areas than others of course. He’s right though... and abundance of coyotes, predators, typically means there’s an abundance of prey available. Predator-prey relationships 101.

“The coyote is not native to Ohio, but it is present throughout the state today.” http://wildlife.ohiodnr.gov/species-and-habitats/species-guide-index/mammals/coyote

Potato potato. I assume non-native is the same as invasive. 🤣.
Classic example... Cyprinus carpio, the common carp. Brought to the Sandusky Bay marsh region in the early 1800’s from Europe. Non-native, but not considered an invasive species by any means. So it’s not really potato potato. There actually can be a difference.

How it got there is irrelevant man.

"An invasive species is a species that is not native to a specific location, and that has a tendency to spread to a degree believed to cause damage to the environment, human economy or human health." Wikipedia

By definitiin the non-native carps destruction of native fish nesting areas means it's invasive. Same for coyotes eating native species.

forcing us to buy a furtakers permit to kill coyotes is a blatant money grab, just like having to buy a fall turkey tag in addition to a spring tag. I see this as a money maker more than some covert form of deer management. either way, it's insulting, laughable. they should be paying us to kill coyotes.

Like I said, I’ll believe it when I see it. It’s still early. Even if it goes through, I think compliance is going to be extremely low. It may not last, for that reason alone. Just like the tree stand law they established a year or two ago... Nobody complied and it was a pain for WO’s, so guess what... that’s going away again.

There was a tree stand law?? 🤔🤣🤣

I think a guy I worked with from PA said they have something similar to this already regarding yote's and seasons.
It dumbfounded me then.
