Ohio 2016 Rut Report. County? Conditions?

Friday was one of the most exciting sits ive had in awhile without killing something. About 6 oclock I hear deer walking up out of the ravine behind me and out pop 4 does about 75 yds up the ridge line. Normally they meander down the ridge right in front of my stand and head out to the CRP field. Well they started to but decided to drop into the dry creek bed and head straight up a steep bank out to the field a way Ive really never seen before. Long story short about 10 minutes later here come 4 bucks on a line following the does, I tried a can call to no avail and a few grunts but they didn't even look my way. The first two bucks were my #1 and #2 bucks for this property. Needless to say I got to watch them for the next hour chase each other all over the field. Disappointing and cool all in the same sit! Here are the 2 bucks that were leading pack. The first buck is one I named Trident, cuz if you look at the one pic you can see 3 distinct stickers coming off his rt brow.

This weekend it seems the daytime activity is starting to pick up. Seem quite a few 2.5 year olds and younger over the weekend. I did see a nice 2.5 yr old 12pt. Passing on him for two years. I'm waiting for the 150 class 8pt and a very large 160 class 14pt.

Had a 2.5yr old last night come into the antlers rattling. He was in shortly after a 1.5yr old pushed a young doe around. The 2.5yr old was making clicking sounds and looking for action.

I also believe the doe I killed last night had already been bred. I believe it was recent. Her hind quarter fur was rubbed oddly. Her tarsal glands were stained. Oh yeah. . .and her vagina was gaping open with sperm oozing out. Not something I wanted to think about as I field dressed her, but it is hard to overlook. Just part of nature.

Starting to heat up in Ashtabula County. No kill, but a pretty cool sit for me...

I tent camped at my property last night and a couple of bucks sparring woke me up about 10:00 pm - first time I heard that in person! Got me excited for this morning.

I was walking in about 6 am and heard a deer busting through the brush. I figure no big deal. Then I heard another busting through, and could hear that more than one was running around. With no moon it was too dark to see anything - they sound close, so sidled up to a tree to wait them out. Then I heard snort wheezing and clacking antlers and hoof beats. The commotion lasted about 10 minutes, and after my heart rate got close to normal, I slowly made my way to my stand. Once in the stand, I checked my wireless camera and got this picture. I was standing about 30 yards from the camera when this was going down. Their antlers aren't going to make the record books, but for a guy that's only been doing this for a few years, it was pretty damn exciting.

The rest of the day was less eventful, but still active - 6 sightings, one was a buck (out of range) and the only one in range was a fawn.

Looking forward to my next sit this weekend.

Thanks to all who commented. I passed them along to my son. He said he watched this buck for 30 minutes in a field working his way. The buck bedded down for 15 minutes got back up and continued down the trail to the funnel where my son hunts. He was debating rather or not to shoot the whole time and when he got within 5 yards he decided he was good enough.You can tell by the entry wound in the pic he was almost directly under him when he shot. He watched him go down within 60-70 yards of the stand. No tracking necessary this time.

A buddy called me around Noon today and told me there was a stud bedded with a doe in the field a couple hundred yards from one of my stands. Cruised by at 6pm tonight and they were about 100 yards from my stand eating winter wheat. He looked to be well over 150". He is a super tall main frame 10 point, looked like some junk around the bases. Hoping to get out there tomorrow
