Ohio Turkey Hunting Report

The birds have been pretty quiet this morning from the get go. I know there here because I've been watching them TOO. I had a barred owl swoop in behind me and began calling while several toms, jakes and hens fed out in the field and he couldn't even get a bird to gobble. WTH! Hope those hens go to nest soon, I got shit to do before this storm gets here this afternoon. Lol

Called it quits at 11:45 this morning. I wouldn't have but after the birds dispersed and left they appeared to have left for good. I did some aggressive calling every 20 minutes or so with a great deal of field to view. Nothing showed back up. I will be hitting it hard off and on throughout the rest of the week unless it's storming or real windy. Goodluck fellas!

Dang Chad! You killed BIG BIRD!

Well, after sleeping till 11 this morning, running an errand and grabbing a bite to eat I'm now setup at the edge of the same field I saw the group of strutters yesterday. I saw several out in fields strutting at 1:00 this afternoon on my way to drop something off at my daughters school. Something different/new tactic. I'll give it to 3 to 3:30 then I have to head out and get ready for work. Goodluck everyone!

I did a little evening hunt yesterday but didnt have any luck. With this rain we got today i doubt any mowing will be possible..so that just means more hunting time!

Goodluck Jake if you go hunting.

Update: I had a hen pop out of a finger about 100 yards away. Figure her nest is close by. Been doing some calling with my Jake and hen decoys out so if anything pops out into this field, they will see them. So far just the hen. It's amazing how these big birds seem to disappear when they are in their feeding mode. I'm learning quite a bit this spring just observing these birds and of course what y'all been sharing here on TOO.

No doubt! You are loggin in some serious hours on these birds.

Just an indication as to how much more in need to get better. I need to start practicing and learning how to use a mouth call and which vocalizations are best at different times. I truely came so close on one big bird so far and didn't hunt at all over this pass weekend and nearly all of last week. I won't be out much this weekend due to being out of town for Mothers Day. Gotta get it done the rest of this week and next week......my time is running out! Fugg!

I went out this morning for bird #2. Went to a deer hunting property that I have rarely turkey hunted hoping there was a gobbler around. I walked in 1/2 mile and finally heard a gobble off about 300 yards. Snuck toward the gobble and got within 100 yards of him. There ended up being 3 different birds gobbling in the same area, and a hen or 2 also. Fast forward to 7:30, the turkeys are still gobbling from the same spot as daylight, so I sneak in as close as possible and find them still roosted! These birds stayed in the tree til 8:00! When they flew down they went to the other side of the creek and then I backed out and went around and got ahead of them. Did some calling and called them all in, ended up being 7 Jakes, the longest beard was 5" so I decided not to shoot.

Sounds like a good time, Chad. Too bad there wasn't a beard long enough to interest you. Better luck next time!

Headed to the farm for my first evening hunt of the season and had a little luck. I started on Hippie Ridge where I grabbed a seat and listened for 45 minutes. I was fooling with me new Sonic Dome when I got a bird to light up a good 1/2 mile away. I hopped on the quad and headed to the next ridge N in hopes of getting him to talk again. When I arrived on the edge of the field, I glasses a single hen with two solid toms in full strut. I made an attempt to call them in to the woods before deciding just to observe. I watched them for nearly an hour before backing out. I'm almost positive one flew to roost right after I left.

They are on a hardwoods point off a freshly disc'd and fertilized field. I know where I'll start tomorrow...

I have been watching some birds about every day. Knowing exactly where they roost is vital IMO. Again, as I have stated before...I am no turkey hunter...But I am a deer hunter. I think hunting them in the evenings in kinda like deer hunting. I have one gobbler in particular that is super consistent. Every night he and his babes do the exact same thing...They walk within 30 yards of the same tree in a pasture leading to where they are roosting. If I wasnt done, he would be a super easy bird to kill

Dead bird if you want him dead!

Well im out of tags......ha SO I wont be killing him. haha There is another kid who is hunting the property...I went out to call for him last weekend and had the bird within 60 yards and closing...We had a small rise between us...he decided the bird wasnt coming and he wanted to go after it. I advised him not to and to give the bird a little time....Considering the bird had been out of the tree a grand total of 5 minutes.....but he decided to go against my advise and took about 10 steps and spooked him as he was working told us quietly......soooooooooooo.....I will not be sharing any more of my findings with him....Ill let him figure the bird out on his own...I suspect he will be there for me to hunt next spring. haha

Trying to find some hope. Went out tonight to road scout and attempt to roost some birds. Zero luck. I do believe the birds have left the property. What a whiner I am becoming. I have a feeling this is what it was like to hunt deer in the 60's. I will get one eventually, but with the work load and kids' schedules, turkey hunting is just not my number one priority right now. Wish I could sneak away for the weekend, but that isn't in the cards either.

Made it out about 1 today, first place could not find any birds. I got to the next and could see a nice tom with two others in the corner of a field, so i made it all the way around the woods and got set up and worked him for about an hour. I was not able to get him to gobble to save my life, every time i would call he would just strut for a second then go back to feeding. They just finished what they were doing and moved on. Oh well I guess i will just work on him tommorow, I think i will be taking waders next time I had a hell of a time finding a place to sit. this woods is a swamp and with all the rain there was no less than 6 to 8 inches of standing water in there.

They act wierd in the evenings John, if you can get one to gobble it's almost a miracle it seems lilke. Diablo and i had a hen at 10 yards and spooked one prior to that. They were nesting. We actually roosted one too which was suprising..he gobbled like 6 times to our owl calls.
