Ohio Turkey Hunting Report

You know how to build a suspenseful story Brock! Good luck!

Sorry Phil, pretty sure my mind will be on that ridge all night as I try to sleep! You know how it is, by the time the alarm goes off I'll be wore out from trying to kill this sucker all night. :) I really wish I had permission on that little piece of private land, sure would make my life a lot easier in the morning!

Good luck! You are brave to step foot during turkey season on the public land we have around here, so I give you Kudos!! If you have no luck, check the woods to the east of the pioneer village. They were gobbling pretty good there earlier in the year. I'm sure the vocal ones have been trampled to death by now, but there might still be a couple straglers left in the area. I hope you drag that sucker out! I hunted four years before I killed a turkey, most of them were spent on that wildlife area, not having a clue what I was doing. If only I knew then what I know now!

I'm not going near the Pioneer Village. Too easy to access that area. We run into a lot of folks up on this end, but they have to earn it to get back in there! I'm hoping we won't have an issue since we are going into week two now, and on a Monday. It makes a world of difference most days. I really am considering a stealthy approach on this bird, and hopefully keep him quiet. I swear, he has lived by avoiding hens he can't see.

You guys that are hearing birds but not having success pulling them in.... Are you making any attempt to move to the bird and setup or are you just staying in a stationary setup and hoping they work to you?

I moved as far as I could without trespassing. I tried to make it sound like I was slowly coming to him.

I've been doing both and like Mike said, I can't cross a creek where most of the action I hear is coming from but try to give the impression that I'm a hen looking for a mate... But I'll stay stationary at times if I think a bird might be on his way to me.

As of this morning I heard gobbling way off in the distance which was a first for me and they seem to have gotten alittle closer but still a ways off. I've got just one hen and a Jake decoy out right now and just staying put for now. I'm at the point now if "it's red it's dead"! Hoping for a Tom but if a nice Jake comes in, I'm ready to kill something! Lol

Our hunt this morning was a bust. We made the long hike around the bird we put to bed last night and planned to bushwhack him when he came off the hill. The best laid plans never work. We heard nothing gobble on the roost. We did however hear a hen come along the creek behind us, turn and go up the ridge, and then suddenly turn into a horrible sounding crow. I suspect that didn't help our chances much. We never did see the guy, but I would have liked to kick him. That's the problem with this public land...too many people and not enough room to move. Incidentally, the guy didn't pay much attention to the posted signs that are scattered every 50 yards along the private land either. It is no wonder that even a dumb turkey can figure out when things just aren't right. When you sit in the woods as just an observer of other hunters, it becomes painfully obvious how we (hunters) are so predictably stupid. BTW, Mason's patience wore too thin to kick back and wait the turkeys out. I don't blame him a bit, as turkey hunting is mighty boring when they don't want to chat much.

Looking forward to the pics! Hope you have a little luck today.

Nope Brock, this morning was a no show for anything. I hunted till 10:30(which is when I'll prolly start hunting the next few days), and just slipped on out to head on home and get some work done around the house. The turkeys just weren't in my immediate area like they have been. I'll still be trying throughout the week though.

Goodluck to everyone else and Congrats to the victors!

Sorry to hear that Brock, I was pulling for you. Cant say I am surprised though. That land is just more trouble than its worth to me. If I had a good place for you to take your boy I would definately offer it since I know we live close. Teaching youth the proper and safe way to hunt is something that is extremely important to our hunting heritage. Unfortunately most of the places that I have to hunt that have turkeys either would not like me to bring guests or are places I can hunt with invite only. Hope you find one for him, and hope you get a bird in soon as well FS!! The same go's to the rest of you too.

I can't say I was overly surprised either. It is what it is. Last year during the youth season, a resident idiot drug the neighbor boy right into our set up. We had a big longbeard strutting at about 35 or 40 yards, gobbling occasionally. The idiot heard the bird and tried to sneak up on him....and walked right to where the bird was strutting. Mason was pretty hot about that one and gave the guy an ear-full. :) At first I thought he was just dumb, but looking back, I am certain he heard us working the bird and figured he would put an end to our game. After a few words, we parted ways and they set up right there and killed a jake...which only added to Mason's somewhat foul mood on the matter.

I really thought we had a good set up this morning to bushwhack one. It just didn't happen, and Mason made matter worse by continually telling me we should have gone to one of our other properties. I hate to admit it, but he was right. I will take him somewhere else this weekend. That was our first hunt over on the WA this year, and I don't intend to go back.

I am out now and no turkey sounds at all. Had a rabbit sit beside me for a minute but that is it.

I went out yesterday evening to try and roost a bird or two for the hell of it. Pulled into the farm, and saw they were planting the fields. With tractors running in two separate fields, I figured I was wasting my time. Maybe this evening...

Juggled three kids last night and this morning. Have a perspective employee to interview at 9am otherwise I would have considered heading out late after the kids got on the bus. Maybe tomorrow I will try that.

It will make that farm all the better over the next couple of weeks! That fresh dirt will be even more attractive to them!!! I think we'll have some fun on Sunday!!!

They planted the field across the street yesterday. The turkey's were out scratching and feeding while the tractor was working. They've been out there all morning but no Red Headded ones.........
