Ohio Turkey Hunting Report

The guy that owns one of our hotspots called me the other day to see if I wanted to buy it... That's a bummer, cause I don't have that kind of money laying around to buy a place that has a total of 2 good sites for treestands, regardless of how many turkeys we've seen and killed there. This may be our last season hunting there. Luckily, we do have permission of the adjoining farm too. May get out there in the morning for a listen, but will probably sleep in. Pretty sure they'll be around some where once season rolls around.

I went crappie fishing this afternoon for a couple of hours. I arrived at the bay in which I wanted to start fishing about 1130-1145. As soon as I shut off the motor I heard one gobblin up a storm on the ridge above me. He gobbled non-stop until I left at 215. That's the kind of bird even I could kill. :) Too bad he is living in someone's yard. We may have to move to Rocky Fork so I can shoot stuff out the back window. :)

I was in Harrison County, WV yesterday reviewing a possible well site and walked right up on 2 gobblers in full strut with 3 hens. With the wet leaves and a nearby drilling rig, it made for the perfect cover to get right in their wheelhouse. I was only 35 yards away and watched them for a few minutes. On the way home I saw 3 birds in full strut in a pasture field along Rt. 50. Today I was in Wetzel County, WV checking in on some work we are doing on a portion of the Lewis-Wetzel WMA, which is 13,590 acres. I stopped to make a phone call and heard birds gobbling over the hill. Got the call out and hit it a few times and they responded immediately.

So as usual, our season will start about 2 weeks too late.

Here's the good part: I have a 2015 nonresident WV hunting license I bought for waterfowl. I'll probably buy me a turkey tag since I'm in WV 3 days a week and literally have thousands of acres of public ground, and hundreds of private I can hunt.

Gonna try to be at the fence post at 6 tomorrow morning to see if it's worth buying a tag...sure wouldn't mind hearing a few gobbles.

I haven't been on here much lately, been so freakin busy with a bunch of crap... Our first outing will be tomorrow morning. Hoping to hear one gobble a few times before one of the boys shoots 'em We are going into an area that neither my buddy Clint or I are familiar with, but I've seen turkeys in the general area while fishing. That, my friends, is the kind of time I invest into turkey scouting! :)

Good luck to everyone that is getting out this weekend with a youth, and in the coming weeks!

A few distant gobbles so far. My dad is to the right. Kody got his scent blocker coat just in case they smell us. Lol

We have two gobbling , 1 in front and the other behind us. Did manage to call in all the deer in the county though.
