Layla had a long beard inside 40 yards, but just a little to far with the crossbow. We watched hens fly down, heard 3 hammering in the trees and watched a strutter come all the way across the field to us. Needed 10 more steps, but we had an awesome time!
We packed it in around 8:30 due to baseball stuff going on for me and for the boys as well. We had lots of distant gobbling most of the morning, but nothing close enough to say "yeah, they're coming".
Great morning either way.
We worked toms at two spots this morning. First one cane in under 50 yards just below us in a shelf and wouldnt come up. We got one to gobble around 0930 and worked him for an hour. We didnt have time to put decoys out and he stood about 80 yards away and strutted and gobbled until he decided he was tired of it and wandered off. Nonetheless a great morning with a 10 year old! 15 morels to boot.
Had a great morning in the spring woods! 3 long beards within 35yrds then about 15 minutes later 4 jakes at 15yrds with the decoys. No shots but a good learning experience with my boy.
Alex, Travis and I had a good morning. We set up on a bird about 5:50 that I had roosted the night before. Turned out to be a monster hen. The tom gobbled behind us about 100 yards and we booked it to move in in him. Had him going on the limb but he was with 4-5 hens. He didn't pitch to the decoys but rather a field about 75 yards behind us. We snuck up to the field edge and he was out there with 5-6 hens. Travis and I belly crawled up to the edge and got in position. The bird came by and Travis took the shot at about 40 yards. He clipped a sapling about 10 feet in front of the gun. The hens scattered. The tom ran about 20 yards and strutted. Gobbled. Ran some more and strutted. He kept this up for a while but wouldn't come back. He was just worried about the hens. We played cat and mouse for about a half mile before the tom hung it up for the day.
This evening that bird was right back in his field corner like he is every night. Should have went but he'll be there in the morning.
Here is a pic Alex took of Travis and I and the tom. We're right in front of that tree.
Made my daughter get up and go with us this morning. First time in ten years she has gone. She wished she would have stayed in bed. Mason and i had a blast though. Did not shoot anything, but we had them close and gobbling all morning. I think my fidgety teenager may have tipped them off
Comgratulations to the kids that got on the trigger!
