Ric and Karissa's hunting journal for the 2016-2017 season

Thanks Dick, I sure hope so but if not we'll have fun trying! Her school work load is pretty full this fall but we'll try to squeeze in some hunting time that for sure!

I got skunked on my first morning hunt of the season this past Friday. Still had a great time and the 6-7 squirrels kept me entertained anyway! I hunted from 7:15 to 11:30. I also swapped 4 cards as I left which revealed pretty much the same like I've got all summer long, small bucks, does and young deer. The bucks are starting to checkout my mock scrapes though.

Here's a view into the wind(SE). There's an inside corner to the standing cornfield about 100 yards straight out and to the right but I'm still covering the pinch where I shot Character on Oct. 21st 2013. The tree I was in that morning is the dark one just right of the center in this photo. When Brian helped me put our stands up last fall we both agreed that it was best to move to the tree I'm in now because it was more centrally located to where I can cover more of the pinch if they tried to pass thru closer to the highwall to the West.

I'll shit if the first deer you see is a shooter and it dies. lmao

You and me both brother! rotflmao

Seriously, this small part of the farm is basically a travel corridor with some 150-200 yard long fingers that deer can bed in along their travels. Great spots for a rogue buck to plop his ass down and wait for the doe traffic to pass thru or just sit tight and scent check them till a ripe one strolls by. It's more of a rut hunting property and up till now only younger bucks have been coming thru checking on things. It won't be long till the bigger bucks start including this property as a part of their rounds or travel pattern. Just gotta hope one of us or both of us are hunting when that time happens! Lol

K and I shot for about an hour total last night with about a 1/2 break in between two sessions. Overall she shot good but not as great as she has been. Her groups at 20 were all inside a 4-5" circle and in the kill zone but from the start they were about 3-4" to the left of where she was aiming(aiming for center mass/double lung but grouping right in the pocket or on the shoulder blade). This was frustrating to her and I said, "welcome to the world of archery!" Lol

Anyway I moved the pins bracket just a scoach to the left and that helped but I basically told her to just take her time and not over think it and not to worry about where the pin was at the shot. Just keep looking at the spot she wants to hit and relax into the trigger as she goes through her shot process. I think she was just over aiming worrying about that pin TOO much. Concentration and the mental game is a bitch!!! By the end of our shooting her groups got back to hitting where she was looking and we quit on a positive note, which is a great feeling!

Just a little bit ago while I'm here at work she sent me this pic!

Glad to see she started where we left off but told her no more shooting all 6 of her arrows at the same target and to just shoot 2-3 each round! :)

She has a small fall break from school later this week so it looks like Thursday thru Saturday we'll have our first hunts together! It can't get here soon enough! :pickle:

Looking good! Good tip on telling her to keep her practice shots minimal. I shot myself into TP and all kinds of bad habits back in the day by pumping arrows like a machine. Quality not quantity!

Looks to me like she is ready for that rogue buck! You're screwed buddy, there is only one good buck a year that walks by your stands, and she's going to kill him! Ha. I'm sure Ron will let you have a gun again for the Monday after Thanksgiving!

I'd be tickled as a pig in shit to tote Ron's ole Henry again this gun season buddy! That was fuuuuuuun!!! I told Karissa just like I did last year I'm her camera man whenever she can get out and hunt. Unfortunately her school workload and RA responsibilities at her dorm will cut into her free time some this fall. We'll just have to make due with what time we got and hope the weather and a shooter deer cooperate on those few dates.

As for me, I'll be hunting as much as I can get out as I'm just as anxious and giddy as everyone else here!:pickle:

I'll probably be heading to the SE to do some hunting back home with Ron and our buddies some again like I did last year. It's nice hunting at the farm close to the house so I can still keep up on chores and family stuff but I miss hunting with Ron like we did in the old days! So I'm gonna try and split some time between here and there and just have fun! No pressure here for me to kill anything this year but I'll take whatever the good Lord sends my way...:pickle:

October 29th will definitely be a stretch as I'll not be able to hunt much before then but it's on from 11/4-11/13!!! Timing is everything though, it just comes down to being in the right place at the right time then making the best of the opportunity. Both of us have our bows shooting great so as long as we do our part if an opportunity arises we should be good but having fun and building memories and getting home safely is our goal this season!

Good luck to those still hunting and congratulations to those who've filled their freezer and killed a nice buck! Let's have fun and be safe out there!!!

Karissa and I had a great hunt together Friday morning. Hunted from from 7 to 11. We saw 7'deer from 8:30'to 10:30'but nothing but a small 5 point offered a shot. After he sauntered on thru and stood quartered away at 18 yards she smiles at me and said, "he gave me a really good shot right there!" She also spotted a spike hitting a scrape thru the trees 100 yards away on the other side of the new field. We also had a doe and two little ones pass thru at 30 yards.

Later in the afternoon after we both getting some things done we went to another spot I had a single stand and we put up another stand in the tree with it so we have a 3rd double set out for a NW-N-NE wind. At the time the wind was out of the E which still might have worked so we went ahead and hunted it. We sat there from 5 to 7 and got skunked but still had fun.

I hunted solo tonight for 2 hours from 5-7 covering the creek crossing near the highway. The wind was perfect for it so I went on a hunch but got skunked again but still had fun. What wasn't fun was going thru the 60 plus video images after getting settled in and not seeing anything exciting on them. Caught someone's two big dogs running thru a scrape with noses on the ground at 4:30pm and 10:30 pm last week! A couple yotes and just does and small bucks took up the rest of the videos. Oh well, it's still early but hoping some mature bucks start adding this little farm to their travel routes soon! Lol
