I'm very proud of Slick. He has been super good with his foot. He is a high energy dog but has done a good job of relaxing, not licking or chewing his foot and taking the meds. He does not like the cone of shame one little bit, lol. I swear he knows that we are back in the woods as soon as he is healed up. I have kept a boot on his foot whenever we go outside, which he hates, but puts up with it. We have gone for several leashed walks, and yesterday I let him off of the lead and he was like a kid in a candy store. I suppose the timing could have been worse as we had to take these four days off anyhow. His foot looks great and has healed up really well. I'm taking him to the vet on Tuesday (day 14) to remove sutures and make sure we are good to go. Back to work next week, I hope. 🤞

Cleared for takeoff.

There is a nice bike path on the way to the vet, so we stopped on the way home for some fresh air. Slick could not wait until tomorrow, lol. Got himself a double at the bike path.

Squirrels not out today. No fresh tracks in the three woods we visited. Dogs floundered the whole day. Saw one squirrel and it got to live. I'm pretty sure Slick winded that one. Slick has a sore and tender foot now, but he ran his ass off today and couldn't hardly find anything to bark about. Rest that foot tomorrow. Try again on Friday.

Squirrels out some today. Slick treed 5 and I killed them all. He was hunting really slow (for him) today. I think he figured something out. He now has a recognizable bark when he is winding a squirrel, which he did three times today. Had ourselves a nice hunt in the snow.

I got Lefty to lick the squirrel brains off the side of Slick’s head when we got home. 😆

Squirrel activity has been pretty slow around these parts for the last several days. Took uncle Charlie out with me yesterday. I put Lefty's collar on him, and he came out with us when I started the truck to warm up. When I went back inside to get our gear, he followed me in, went straight to the couch and laid down. I took his collar off and was glad he let me know he did not want to go. It is hard to leave him behind, but the cold and snow would have been very hard on him.

With the sun out all day I thought we might have a massacre, and Slick getting on one within 30 seconds of me letting him off the lead, I was sure of it., lol. As we hunted on, there were no fresh tracks to be found all morning. I shot the first squirrel, and it would be another hour before we laid eyes on another, but we went to numerous dens in the meantime. The second one stayed put just until we arrived and found it. That one immediately skydived to the ground for a pretty long and exciting foot chase. Slick almost had it twice, but rat got to a hole nearly 100 yards from where we started. On our second stop Slick went to several dens but did not tree a squirrel. While he was very hot on a big tree and we were searching with binoculars he lost interest and left. As I started looking around, I spotted a squirrel in different tree 50 or 60 yards from the one he was on. I watched the squirrel and the dog for a minute, discovering a second squirrel in the same tree. Slick actually walked right by that tree twice and paid it no attention at all, so those two got to live. We arrived at our third stop early in the afternoon, and the wind had picked up quite a bit. Slick found three and they all went to the game bag. Also went to several more dens. Slick worked hard all day with not much to go on besides cold tracks and laid up squirrels. We took a very long walk in just enough snow to make walking more difficult to see 7 squirrels total. Slick treed 5, 4 got skinned. Not a bad day for this time of year considering the conditions on the ground. Try again when it gets back above 15 degrees. No pics.

Yo, Miller, my legs are up for a walk whenever we can work it out. Unfortunately, close to home we still have close to a foot of snow on the ground. I went for a couple of pheasant hunts w peanut the last couple days of season and the walking was brutal.
