Ok guys....I need to get you caught up on the last 24 hours.
I decided that I would go for broke and get my son a crossbow since he is only 8 soon to be 9 years old. He isn't strong enough to pull a 40lb bow yet, but he is a damn fine shot with a rifle and crossbow, so I have a lot of confidence he can make a killing shot. I went and bought a Horton youth crossbow (125 lb pull) today. Brought it home and shot it a few times and it was already dialed in right from the factory. Picked him up from school and we got home and started practicing right away. He was hitting perfectly from 15 to 25 yards, which is as far as I want him to shoot, so we headed out to the best spot I have to hunt. It is a freshly placed ground blind along the edge of a nice thick woods with beans to the left and clover to the right. I have supreme confidence in this place for seeing deer and I knew if I could get this blind placed and brushed in good that we would have a chance.......Last Sunday we hunted in this spot and saw 4 different bucks, but they were out of range for my bow.
So we get in the blind about 5:30 tonite and there is a combine running beans about 1/4 mile to the west of us. The mosquitos are about as fucking bad as they have ever been for some reason....and I didn't even think about bringing the thermacell. About 6:45 a doe and 2 fawns stood up from the clover/weed patch and start heading our way. They got to about 50 yards and I turned and looked to the south and there is a scrubby 7 pointer standing at 23 yards right in our shooting lane. I got the bow up on the shooting stick and turned the safety off for him and then another buck, a nice 2 year old 8 pointer probably 15" wide steps right in front of the other buck and is only 15 yards but is facing right at us. I am telling him to wait for the buck to turn broadside.....finally the buck starts walking and is about to go into our south shooting lane and is going to be only 15 yards, but he stops about half way there and is behind some brush. We adjust the shooting stick and bow to the next shooting window to the right and prepare for the buck to walk into the lane........all of the sudden both bucks start looking to the south toward the highway where a combine is coming down the road just south of us less than 1/2 mile. They both trotted back into the woods right next to the blind and never came back out!!!!! So we wait about 5 minutes and I keep telling him that they should come back out now that the combine is gone....we keep watching and all of a sudden here comes 4 deer running at us from the southwest, 3 big does and a real nice buck! The buck splits away from the does and comes right at the blind and before I know it he goes through the first shooting lane at about 15 yards and continues past the second shooting lane at 12 yards and won't stop trotting.......I tried to stop him but he had other plans. He went into the woods right next to us also.
It got dark enough and we snuck out of there without any of those deer seeing or smelling us. The wind was out of the SE tonight which was perfect for this setup.
So we had 3 bucks within 25 yards and didn't get any shots, but none of the deer acted nervous from the brushed in blind or smelled us. I have a good feeling for tomorrow night. We will be in the same spot as long as the wind is good....and the thermacell will be running also!
