TOO Garden Thread

Finally got to spend a couple hours in the garden today. Did my weeding, some training of the climbing plants, pruning and harvesting. Things look pretty good so far. The green and golden zucchini went from almost ready to monstrosities in 3 days. I have plenty of produce for a batch of pickles and some hot pepper mustard. So Dustin and Chad, I got you fellers covered at the shoot!

First harvest of the year.

Ya buddy! I ate damn near the whole jar of the pickles you gave me when we had lunch the first time, gave my uncle the last few. He loves them!

Looking forward to it.

I harvested some cukes last night. Went to WalMart today to buy some pickle making supplies and a Presto 16 quart canner for canning some deer meat this winter.

I just blanched and froze 4 of my 6 heads of broccoli. Cabbage is ready. Eggplants not so much. Zucchini is out of control. Maters are looking really good. Corn didnt grow, never does for me. Everything else does amazing. Banana peppers are looking really good. I've got to get some pickling packs and lids and get after my pickles and peppers this weekend.

we're having one helluva growing season so far. the fruit on our tomato plants is remarkable. both the determinant and indeterminant varieties are overloaded. only a handful of cherry tomatoes ripened so far. zukes and cukes out of control now. I swear they grow to full size overnight sometimes. picked three five gallon buckets full of beans and canned them yesterday. wound up being 28 quarts with just enough left over for another small pot with smoked ham shanks and new potatoes. I'll have this many more in 10 days or less. almost dreading the 'maters getting ripe. they all gonna come at once, it appears. will be a can-a-thon for two or three days to get the put up.

That's awesome Jamie. Just like last year, we'll have a lot ready while we are at the beach. It's certainly been a bountiful year thus far! Good luck with the rest of it.

Nancy planted some blackberries inside the frame of our windmill 4 or 5 years ago. These are thornless plants and produce giant juicy berries. nary a berry on them last year after a late frost got the flowers. back with a vengeance this year. I picked a handful while I was out shooting a few arrows in the yard this morning. we'll have at least two gallons of these giblets over the next two weeks. blackberry cobbler, here I come. :pickle: thumb in the picture for reference, and my hands are not small.

Got back from vacation and the weeds have taken hold. Had 60 HUGE cucumbers and a few zucchini ready. Bunches of peppers also.

We do very little corn as my Uncle does 2-10 acre fields of it (stagger date planting). I am freezing the first to be ready and Mom is canning some others.

Then I checked our blackberries (must be the same type of Jamie's. They are doing great.

I picked one row of beans this morning before work. Cool air and no mosquitos or horseflies.

Maybe I'll do another row tomorrow.

Meanwhile, while I'm at work.....the kids are home cleaning, sorting, and freezing.

My beans look great, but we have no beans. So I'm jealous Ben! Hoping they catch up soon.

I was worried about what I'd find when I got back today after 9 days of neglect by me. Overall, it wasn't too bad. I'm ready for more pickles and hot pepper mustard, plus I have maters for salsa. Also picked some yellow squash which my chickens love and some spaghetti squash which is a new favorite in our house. The only issue I'm having is some sort of blight on my maters. Been peeling dead leaves/branches off all summer. The plants are loaded with fruit, so hopefully they'll get producing.

The bounty!

Man that sucks Charles! I have a lot to add to this thread when I get to sort through my pictures. We've had a pretty good year thus far. Lost a few head of cabbage and a couple pepper plants though.

That garden rocks Jesse. I do NOT envy the amount of work it would require. Hats off to you.

The raised cedar planter beds have been a blessing this year. The mulch around plants and walking areas has reduced our weeding time exponentially. Some plants have done better. Most have. Our squash and zucchini have not done well. This was determined to be caused by the watering system getting plugged. They simply were not getting watered.

Erin has fresh veggies on the counter nonstop. Some she has bought when they were on sale. Most are from our garden. She tried basil and onions this year. They rocked the house. Tomatoes and peppers have done really well. This is also the first year we have gotten some watermelons we should be able to eat.

This picture taken before I weeded and mowed down around the perimeter. Also before I weeded the beds again. Still looks decent. Looks better now.
