Turkey hunt report '17

Haven't seen them as the undergrowth covers them... Even the hay fields cover them up....
Fugg turkeys.... lol
I don't know if you saw my post the other day but I was walking through the 1.5 foot tall alfalfa field and heard a gobble. I ran back to the woods and flushed a hen that had laid down in the tall alfalfa, I've seen them do that more than once.

It's just part of the season. They do this crap every year. Then magically one day they fire up again. The difference is they will come to a call and you will see older birds getting their beaks shot off. Soon. Hopefully very soon.

Happened last year on may 7th, killed his lonely ass around 10am. With the early spring we had I'm confused on where these fuggers are at in terms of turkey rut action. I've been seeing 2-3 longbeards running around together for the last week.

Welp off too the turkey killing field.... Hopefully they got the message that their time is coming too an end....

Or I'll be home by 10 and enjoying a cup of coffee.... Either way it's Friday and it's not raining... Life is good lol

Good luck J!!!

I got set up by 5:50 with a Jake and two hen decoys out in front of the blind. Haven't heard a gobble yet but did see a young yote cross field about 80 yards to the NW. Hope I can get a crack at one of them suckers if anything!

I was typing out a post in another thread on TOO 5 min ago and had 3 velvet bucks cross the field near where the yote I saw earlier crossed. They appeared to be about 5-7" off the burrs at this point.

Got to work the bird from Monday, he was back to being vocal but couldn't kill him. Fun morning and I only needed to use 0.5 hr of my time today. He was the only one gobbling...

Just spotted 2 longbeards a couple hundred yards away, one gobbled and they appeared to be feeding my way. Had to get back to the blind, we shall see.

Good luck dude. Hopefully they head your direction!

Some buddies and I came down to Burr Oak last night. Did some last minute scouting with about an hour to spare and roosted two birds at our last spot. Moved in on them this morning... Two big longbeards came up the ridge adjacent to us. They got within 120 yards but that was it. The two hens they were following just wouldn't come our way. Oh well. Hopefully tomorrow morning they do the same dance. Off to crappie fishing for now!

Thanks! That was a close call you had, good luck tomorrow morning!

Good stuff Jim! Have fun on your trip!

Just got home. Not a dang peep from any birds. Gonna get some stuff done and maybe hunt this evening.

Things seem to be warming back up. Mason and I went this morning. I set up a blind over a field the birds have been using a lot lately. I put two decoys in front of us. Heard four gobbling on the roost, one was close which is why the blind is where it is. Unfortunately, he just wanted to stand 75 yards behind us and gobble non-stop until 830 or so. A hen finally came in and took him the other way. Mason is about to pull his hair out, he's not used to having this much trouble killing a bird. Ha. It's certainly nothing new to me... However, he isn't able to hang with it later in the day due to school. He was late today, his mom wasn't too proud of me for that.

We will abandon these birds to the weekend crowd that will be there tomorrow, but Mason is going to ride the four wheeler over there to sit in the blind this afternoon. He may kill one this evening, I hope.

My buddy killed one this morning. I think that's the first bird he's had close enough to shoot all season.

Well my dad's been in the hospital this week so havn't been out.
Stopped and checked on him and he is going home today so got in the woods around 10:15 gonna hunt till 2.Got to the blind and called, one gobbled took about 45 minutes but finally saw him with a hen,had 4 jakes come in and the gobbler followed the hen about 35 yds out, just too far for my recurve but was fun..
Thats 4 longbeards i have had in this season but either a little too far or just no bow shot.
Had him gobble around noon and peeked out the blind side window saw him at 45 yd's with the hen but that is as close as he would come.
I will keep trying, fun and frustrating at the same time. Lol

Good hunt Brian, enjoyed the pics! Just remember, if you took a gun and rolled him over the fun would end. Hang with it brother!

Fun hunt there, Brian. Bow hunting turkeys makes you want to pull your hair out sometimes lol. I worked 2 birds for 3 hours today, sounded like one of them was around 75 yards away in the woods. Around 1pm a hen started running her mouth so I joined in trying to piss her off, no luck. I think she took him with her. Back at it tomorrow.
