why does that matter? False dichotomy, I don’t see an argument for one to be eliminated to make room for the other. Would be net positive for jobs and tax revenue.
Just curious to what big pharma brings to the table for our economy other than highly addictive drugs on the streets, and over priced insulin and epipens. I would imagine most of the weed would be home grown, where are our drugs manufactured Chiiiiiinnnnnaaaa?

Definitely big business that impacts GDP and employment, even with the offshore production.

The libertarian in me says deregulate it all, tax it and lets use the tax money to fund rehab programs.

The war on drugs has been and continues to be an unwinnable war and a detriment to multiple aspects of our American society.
Only issue with that is rehab only works for those that want it bad enough.
I whole heartedly believe that marijuana should be legalized completely. If cigarettes and alcohol are legal then there is absolutely zero reason that marijuana should not be. For those that believe marijuana is a gateway drug I will throw out there that alcohol and cigarettes can be thrown in that same bucket.

Understood. I disagree. Opioids, Meth, etc. should not be legalized in my opinion. That was the part of rehab I was referring to. My family has been directly impacted by opioids and there is no way I could support its legalization. I hope no one ever has to deal with a family member that will do anything for their next fix. I do not think they are in the same league as pot. I respect others opinions though, these are just mine.

Please do not take this as a slight to the devastation that opioids have had to your family.

Read the book Dreamland and see how big pharma specifically Purdue have made billions on them. It is a great read about the perfect storm of circumstances that lead us to the opioid epidemic.

Addiction can have devastating and deadly consequences yet gambling and alcohol are both legal, what makes them different? in how the addict sees them, nothing.

If you look into some of the crime statistics and influences from the war on drugs that leads to some of the injustices that lead to organizations such as BLM you'll see how there are racial undertones to some of it.

If we legalize EVERYTHING then we can use the taxes for those who want help and for other societal gains rather than us dumping billions of dollars into the police and judiciary system for an unwinnable war on them.

How do you legalize and tax a drug like Meth? Krokodil? I'm not sure there is a safe amount. Is there?
Legalization is easy. Taxing every sale of some amount of it is easy.

Why do we bring in safety? Our entire lives are one large calculated risk assessment. What is the safe amount to drink each night? What isn't? The amount for you, and I and someone else will be different. What's safe for a tree trimmer may be outside the comfort zone of safety for a person working in a cubicle.

Hey @giles, you've been warned and you can't deny it now

Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025 - https://www.dietaryguidelines.gov/s...ietary_Guidelines_for_Americans_2020-2025.pdf

Alcoholic beverages
Adults of legal drinking age can choose not to drink, or to drink in moderation by limiting intake to 2 drinks or less in a day for men and 1 drink or less in a day for women, when alcohol is consumed. Drinking less is better for health than drinking more. There are some adults who should not drink alcohol, such as women who are pregnant.

Well...I waited till I was 20 before I started drinking, I've taken years off in between twice. Should be getting closer to evening out. That's how this works, right? 🤣

Is that a safe amount for everyone? What about someone with alcoholism or addictive tendencies? And that states in moderation, how many people do we know that don't? Also, it depends what study you read and what they are studying it for to determine the ideal amount because the amount of red wine for cardiovascular health is not the same benefit as the same amount or same benefit if you drink busch light.

I drink busch light for other peoples health, not mine. The only other alternative I've found was lithium. I'll take the side effects of the light beer.

It's the latest official guideline from the USDA & the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. I figured some just might be interested in checking it out. It was just released quite recently and I thought of Dave when I came across the alcohol recommendation and giggled.

The Netflix documentary called The Pharmacist does a great job of showing how Purdue pharma started the opioid epidemic. The first episode is about a guy's kid who was killed in Nawlins buying crack. The second one is how he as a pharmacist started noticing the pill addicts were getting bad and dug into it. Shows the whole thing from pill mill doctors, complacent pharmacists, DEA being hamstrung by the feds etc. The big takeaway is the kid that killed the man's son while he was buying crack was 17 years old and did 13 years in prison. . And the big pharma execs that knowingly pushed opioid drugs, lied about the addictiveness of oxycontn, and killed hundreds of thousands of people and destroyed lives never did a day in jail but got probation.
