i think I’m going fishing tonight. Good luck to you deer slayers.
Really not expecting much but it’s getting close to November and this may be the last hunt of the year without a jacket so why not.
Hey man, we like pics too!Almost done with my stretch of nights at the hospital which has kept me out of the woods this late October. Took November 9th through the 15th off. I have ATLS training on the 7th and 8th so I doubt I'll get in the woods. Maybe I can slip in on the 31st. Anyway, here's the story of the family farm and the quest for Wayne county whitetails.
My brother's and I grew up on an 88 acre plot in Wayne county. Its about 2/3 of it is tillable land leased to local farmers for corn and beans. The other 3rd is a strip of pines flanked on either side by a bean field and a clover field. The north end of the pines runs into our neighbords hardwoods which drop down into a saddle where there is a creek running through. Most of the bucks come from our neighbors and northward. South of our pines 10 acres of young woods and thicked where our does bed. Our farm is mostly a doe bedding area with some young bucks, again the big boys tend to stay put up north until the rut. We dont usually get any daylight bucks until early November peaking mid month.
There are 3 truly massive shooters who we've both passed on and missed shots over the years that are bedded up north. The neighbor sent us a pic of the big 10pt typical this summer. He's a 190" typical who we have on camera in the pine trees last November 2nd. The second is a gnarly massive bodied buck, on camera he looks like hes probably 250 pounds. he used to be a tall cool looking 6 point which not turned into a very thick, very unique looking 7 pt. Really cool deer. The third is one I took a 50 yard shot on last year in the rain, a typical 8pt which marble-white antlers thick and beautiful.
I havent bagged a shooter in 4 years. the pressure is on. Ive passed on probably 15 different young bucks over these past few years.
Without all the fluff. and knowing that I have 1 week to get the job done in November. What are the top 3 tips ou'd give to increase my chances on one of these 3 monsters?
What are your feelingd s about going into the stand during the rut AFTER daylight? There have been pics these past few years of our shooters out during mid day. I'm thinking I wanna try it a few times. Like head out around 9/930 and sith through the afternoon insteat of the 7am-12 with a lunch break.
Anyway. My brother and I vowed to only hunt good wind and to access the stands as best as possible. Thanks. Rut pressure is on.
