Doggone good dog thread

I grew up with one dog that was primarily a family companion and they were treated like such. Lex, Rusty, and Mac got be through my childhood and early adulthood. None had a job other than Lex was a Doberman and Mac was mostly rottweiler, so they made good protectors. Rusty was a cocker spaniel that wasn't worth a damn, except to replace Lex and keep 6-12 year old me occupied. Remi was the first dog I ever owned that had a purpose beyond companionship. I love dogs more than people, hence why I have 3 and they're allowed in the house. They're family and I'd prefer to hang out with them as opposed to 99 out of 100 people.

Anymore pictures of Babe and his siblings. Wife and youngest daughter are counting down the hours until Saturday. I have been getting Amazon and Chewy shipping notifications this week, so he should have plenty of toys, treats, dog bowls, food, and not sure what else I saw on the order summaries. LOL.

Pearl’s birthday is today. 3 years old, man time is flying. I had a personal goal of getting her HRCH title before she turned 3 but covid 19 fucked that up. All the test have been canceled until further notice. She needs one more pass to earn her title.

Having many labs before, and having that once in a lifetime great dog before, I never thought I’d get another. I have been blessed again and she is the best I’ve had so far. Never pee’d or pooped in the house since we picked her up at 5 weeks old. She’s never chewed up one thing either....she might not be a lab [emoji23].

Anyhoo, I’m gonna spend the money to get her health clearance and find the right stud to breed with.

Just got done with all the health clearances for my Boykin. It's not cheap FYI

Yes I know. If you don’t mind about what is the dollar figure? Also I know why it’s more expensive to get a puppy w health clearance and titled dogs, there is a big cost that comes with it. And I’ve trained my own dog and haven’t had to pay.

In the big picture, you can buy a puppy without these things but it can come at a big gamble or investment. I intend to raise my dogs like a family member so I want the best for my animals. Previous to doing this, I’ve always just bought a puppy in my price range and gambled. As a dog owner with a breed we share responsibility to make sure the breed is improved and not watered down. No different than we manage our deer to be mature and B & C than to go on a spike killing spree.

Close to $1,000, it cost us more since we did the Pennhip her last cycle since she was less than 2 years old and we wanted to breed her. Under 2, they don't recommend the OFA test. Then we did A.I., which didn't take, so the plan is to breed her when she comes in this cycle. Then we had to do OFA, since they don't recognize the Pennhip test.

You should go to the OFA and see what tests are required for Labs.

We did all the tests required for the Boykin Spaniel Society.

Hip Tests - OFA and Pennhip - About $400 each test
Cardiac
Patella
Eyes
Collie Eye Anomaly
Degenerative Myelopathy
Exercise Induced Collapse

Also did a brucellosis test.

Skye's parents are from Hunter's Rest Kennels owned by Nancy Boykin and after talking with her, she recommended the stud dog that we are breeding to Skye.

Future TOO brothers. Babe is in the back and goes home with @cspot and Gunnar Jr. is in the front. He's going home with @Isaacorps. My wife gave me shit because I "cherry picked" these dogs over two of her friends on our arbitrary little list. Neither friend is a dog person and said "just pick one", so I fail to see why the "order" of the list matters. I did pick for them, from what was left after I skimmed the cream 😂 These are the 2 best natured males in the batch. I'm sure they'll let me down, but they'll be in Pennsylvania and Columbus and no longer my problem! 🤣

Yes. 12, but down to 10. Lost one black female the first night, a chocolate male 4 days in. The rest are doing great. The chocolate female is taken, leaving 9 blacks, 5 males and 4 female. There's one male that's much bigger than the rest and he's got a perfect white diamond on his chest. Gonna be a cool dog. Rest are coal black.

You don’t happen to have a picture of the male with the diamond do you?

This first litter, assuming I pay myself $0 for this otherwise luxurious experience, will be a break even if all 11 owners take me up on their reimbursement offer for spay/neuter. If I pay myself my hourly value as deemed appropriate by my employer, I'm something like $3K in the hole. For those questions the economics of my predicament. 😂

The next litter will cover Gunnar's ball removal, which happens on the 14th, and probably a few hundred rounds of ammo.

Pick of the litter, picks 3-5 of black males, and the single black female go home tonight. That leaves 6 for the weekend, which is way better than 11!

The one I call Bear is the first to fly the coop. He went to my neighbor's buddy, so I'll get to see him again. Several of these dogs I'll get to track through the years. A good friend I see quite often will be her shortly, followed by my sister's BFFs family who lives just down the road, followed by friend of my wife, followed by a family we know through the school system. We have 2 TOOzers coming and 3 people my wife works with. There's really only one that I'll lose track of, which is pretty cool for me. I'll see lots of pictures on Facebook of this litter and the next most likely!
