Spent the last three days from 8 am until 8 pm as a host site for the Beast of the East tournament. We had the 19U division and had teams from Pittsburgh, Brookly, Baltimore, New Jersey, Canada, etc... at our field. We saw some really good baseball and raised almost $1000 for our summer team.

In the middle of yesterdays games I had to head up to Toronto for Klay's first 2 all start tournament games. They destroyed both teams they played and Klay had 2 doubles on the day. His first time up he k'd and that was his second K all year.

Back to Toronto today for hopefully 2 more games. It begins single elimination today.

Our boys went 7-1 in pool play at the Vienna coach pitch tourney to earn a 2 seed, then we promptly beat the Vienna team in the first round of the tourney. We are playing in the B class right now, which is where we should be, but there has been a lot of bitching about us being in there. For years, we have been bringing teams over here and beating the snot out of the uppity city teams and they HATE it. We're just a bunch of dumb rednecks from Ohio, but we can play ball! We play at 6 tonight for a spot in the championship under the lights. If we win, I imagine we will play the only team to beat us, the 1 seed. Their entire team has played spring, summer, and fall ball together since they were 5, so they have a distinct advantage. We were down 7-2 when the rains hit Friday, then made a show of it yesterday losing 13-12. I believe we can beat them and hope we get a chance to do so!

I was just supposed to be an extra coach, but I've spoke up and suggested some moves that weren't real popular from the start. One was moving the head coach's son from SS to second. Coach likes to make excuses for his boy, but I called it like I saw it: Kid is afraid to get in front of the ball. Meanwhile his cousin, and the other coach's son, it playing a mean second base. That move has been huge after getting past the whole family dynamic. Also playing a shift with our right center outfielder playing on the edge of the grass up the middle. The boys have come a long way this summer and so have I in regards to my understanding of coaching at this level.

That's awesome man. Tell it like it is!

I did something similar yesterday, but it was to my own kid. The coach had Klay batting 5th in the lineup. He just wasn't swinging the bat well yesterday at all. He was putting the ball in play, but not with any authority at all. I moved him down to 9th in the second game. F that! Either swing the bat or move down. Next step is on the bench. Guess where we are headed here shortly? To the field for BP.

On a brighter note... his 9-10 year old team won their first all star tournament in Toronto this weekend going 4-0. It wasn't a very big tournament, but a good way to start off the post season. We begin play again Saturday in Weirton, WV.

Nice work Cotty! The difference between kids that work at it and those that don't is evident. I'm sure he will be back up in the order soon enough.

Well I could not be any more proud today to be a coach of the next generation of Warren High School baseball players! After a solid 7-1 start in pool play, we cruised through our first tourney game Sunday evening. Last night we showed up to play the 6 seed in our first game. I really felt despite beating them by mercy rule in the first game, we did not see their best. So I put a little pep in our boys steps before the game and let them know these kids were out for revenge and in order to get avenge our only lose, we had to have a win. Little fuggers came out and stomped a mudhole in their asses and walked it dry with a 15-0 win in 3 innings. They had one runner get to third and one to second. We saw 11 batters total and they only recorded 1 out on us in 3 innings. With the win, we advanced to the championship game against the "best" team in the tourney, with the chance to get them back for that 1 run loss on Sunday.

Before the game I had a little chat with the boys and explained to them the magnitude of the situation. "No one wants you to win this tournament. They don't think you can win it, or deserve to win it. This team already beat you and if that doesn't make you mad and drive you to leave it all on the field in a few minutes, then you are not a ball player. I need ball players, not kids who play baseball in this game. Give me 100% like you have been and we'll leave with trophies tonight..."

Our first batter of the game is a kid destine for D1 ball and he slapped a shot to third, then got gunned out and the tears were flowing as soon as his hit the bag. He was so amp'd to start the game off he couldn't help himself. We went 1-2-3 in that inning and were looking a little flat. We gave up one run in the first and they came off the field like deflated balloons, so I called a huddle again. I usually leave the ass chewings to the other two coaches and play the "cool coach" rule since I'm not a dad. But these kids have taken a liking to me and I felt it was time to show some fire, so I got them in the huddle and lit a fire in their ass. Next thing you know, we are 5-1, then 7-1, and then 10-3 going in to the 5th. We took the field in the bottom of the 6th with a 17-7 advantage, gave up a couple well earned runs and won it 17-9.

I coach with twice the fire I play with and that is saying something. I had an absolute blast coaching these boys in this tournament. They didn't play perfect ball, but it was as close to it as you are going to get from 7-8-9 year olds! I coach from the field as well as coaching first base when we hit and I was moving kids around last night with each new batter. No less than 3 times last night, I moved someone in to perfect position to make a play. Now that I have been doing that with them, I see a couple of them doing it on their own and that really makes me happy! Our SS and 2nd move paid off HUGE last night also! But I was most proud of two boys from our regular season team, my second cousin Jakob and aholdren's boy Austin. They played SS and 1st in regular season and are now our left and left-center outfields. (Austin also catches when he is not in LC.) Both of them played a great outfield last night and Austin did well behind the plate. They both hit well also. If you can keep both boys in the game, they are good ball players and they came to play last night!!!

Way to go Jesse. I tell ya what, these kids respond to outsiders more than dads many times because they know you are there for all of the kids and not just one kid. Not that any of us dads don't coach em all up, but there is just something about someone there for the love of the game. I remember playing for a guy that was in his late 20's ealry 30's when I was in little league and I enjoyed him more than my buddy's dad who coached. Both were good, but I just knew the other guy had everyone's best interest at heart. I hope that makes sense.

For that reason I never let dads coach my summer HS team. I always get old players or friends to coach and the kids like leaving dad outside the fence.

Jesse you forgot about JT's comment to you about being his favorite coach! It's alot of fun as a parent to watch these kids interact with Jesse, they definitely see him as one of them. I really look forward to this coming weekends tourny at Lowel.

Klay's post season has been good as a team. They are 8-0 right now and have won the Toronto and Weirton, WV tournaments. They beat Richmond yesterday in the Richmond tourney and await the winner of Steubenville and Toronto on Saturday. We've already beat both of them in other tournaments. Klay is not hitting so hot right now. It's funny how you can tell if a batter is seeing the ball well. Right now I'd say he's seeing marbles instead of baseballs. He struck out twice all season and has already k's 4 times in the tournaments. Of course, pitching is better now too.
He is, howeer, playing good defense and helping out in that way.

Glad to hear they are doing well, Mike!

I should have never allowed Mason to play in this allstar crap. Seriously, I am no "real coach", but I would have never imagined I would see a coach that could take a group of talented boys and turn them into this.... In last week's tournament, Mason played 5 positions. Most of the other boys did the same. How in the heck does a person get it in his mind that the team will do their best when they are in different positions all day long? The practices are a nightmare to watch. There is no organization in the drills. They will line 6 kids up left to right, hit a fly into the middle, and watch every kid move toward the ball and then scatter so they can see it impact the ground! I butted in long enough to show them a better drill. The boys were responding well, and "getting" what their job is....and then the wife of the head coach went back to the scattered out line. I looked her in the face and said "I can't watch this shit!" Mason has done surprisingly well on an individual level, but they can't win as individuals. The whole thing is just a melt-down into stupidity, and sadly Mason wants to quit due to the chaos. I won't let him of course, but really wish he'd have never started this tournament thing.

Both boys are done for the season. My youngest has already had tryouts and next years team is already in place. My oldest son tryouts for a new team tomorrow and again on July 28th. Today my daughter run ruled two teams and has three games tomorrow.

Come on football!

Yeah Brock, it's tough to get in the groove of a game moving around so much. We move kids around too, but mostly the infielders based on who's pitching. All of the kids on the team were jnfielders all season so they all do
Pretty well wherever they are.

We played our rival Steubenville today. Klay had a rough game in the field which is unusual. He made 2 errors at second, but he made up for it. The game was tied at 6 in the bottom of the 6th. Bases were loaded and 2 out and Klay stepped up. I was nervous as hell because he's been slumping. He hit a shot to third that ate up the third baseman and everyone was safe for the game winner. He was stoked.

Sounds like Klay got a little redemption! Congratulations! Always important to end on a high-note.

Yesterday Klays team took their first 2 losses. Richmond came out of the losers bracket and beat us twice with some solid pitching and defense.

Today started the final tournament and it's at our home field. We beat Toronto 10-5.
Gotta admit, I'm ready for a break.

Then fall ball starts real soon. Sheesh!
