Glad you found him. By the angle of the bolt that's in him it looks like his ass was almost straight on with your buddy, that's a pretty risky shot IMO.

That would have taken out the diaphragm, (the thin muscle between the liver and the lungs) without that, they can do breathe. The diaphragm contracting and expanding is what inhale and exhales air from the lungs.
I figure there wasn't much blood due to the fat in the area of the entrance, would have acted as a sort of plug.

Glad you found him. But, I have to agree with Chad, that was a high risk shot angle. But, then I admit, I like my deer broadside, or very close to it, when I take a shot. Not trying to ridicule your buddy, just stating what I think.

I've hit one like that before walking away from me,the deer didn't go 30yds. and fell over,,,I can't imagine it going a 100yds.,,WOw they are tough critters

Congrats ! I had that happen once also . Only reason I found him I could smell him . As soon as I rolled him over blood poured out like dumping a bucket !
