It sure does seem to be a stale forum over there.

mite oretty astonishing to me how 80-90% if folks say something along the lines of “I have to bait due to neighbors but would love to see it outlawed”. I’ve owned land in OH for a few months and that’s my take. Why? Then neighbor w 2ac has a spinner just off the line as does the guy nextdoor.

Council meeting was Wednesday and the proposals haven't been posted yet on DoW website yet. Didn't really hear much chatter from the meeting. Sometimes all the proposals dont come out at the first meeting so they could come out anytime between now and the next meeting in February

I say I wanted it banned with rose colored glasses on. Even if they ban it, people won't universally abide by the rule, so the scenario you spelled out will still happen. In theory, if a critical mass did follow the law, there would be a massive shift in deer movement back towards more natural means. It may help with nocturnal bucks as well, as banning it has the opportunity to make several impacts on the quality of our hunts, good and bad.

Every property around me baits, one absurdly heavily. There a outfitters in the vicinity and they all bait continually. They all have a bunch trail cameras, too. I don’t bait or use cameras for two very simple reasons. Primarily, I do neither because I do not want to for philosophical reasons and general laziness on my part. Secondly, I do not need to. I see plenty of deer and plenty of mature bucks hunting the old fashioned way without employing corn or cameras. NOBODY has to bait deer unless they really want to.

If they ban it won't you see people with enough land start planting corn?
I am going to plant plots but corn will likely never be one of them. While I’ve never planted a plot in ohio- a success corn plot in other states has to be at least 3ac to withstand any browse. Corn is a total pia to grow… like the hardest of any deer foods… and very expensive. People spill corn IMO a because it’s cheap and easy. The classic difference between food plots and baiting… anyone who has grown crops/trees, or hunted naturally occurring food, for wildlife has lived the challenges to know the difference between (bait and food producing plants/trees)

Never cared for deer until I moved to where we live today. Never done it before and I've been doing this for 4yrs straight now. My doing what I do today has made a night & day difference for this location for the better.

It would not hurt me it they banned baiting or feeding wildlife, in fact, it would save me thousands of dollars annually if they do, and I would comply with the law. If such law passes, then I would look into other legal alternatives I could do to help those more vulnerable deer survive the winters.

Today, taking care of the deer has become a passion now for me, and I do take it very seriously, much like a regular job that I do daily. If I did not do what I do today, the hunting in the area would not be nearly as pleasurable not only for me, but for all the others that hunt the area as well, which are many that benefit of my taking care of the deer around here also.

I'm an animal lover. Always have been and that will never change. I take care of deer, I do not make it a habit to hunt over food that I place out for all wildlife, however I will put someone else with not nearly the hunting experience, a novice hunter in setups that are near or over feed sites. I have a few documented examples where persons new to the big game hunting world were able to successfully harvest their first Whitetail Deer ever, and that would most likely never have happened successfully if were not for bait.

Personally, It does not matter to me if the state outlaws baiting, but if they do, then I believe the state will also loose a ton of revenue as well with that kind of law in the books.

8:30AM EDIT:

When my eldest son was ready to get his feet wet and learn how to hunt big game animals, I taught him how to go about it the same way I learned four decades ago in central upstate NY, which is the more traditional old-school hunting like methods and tactics.

He no longer hunts today regularly because I think it was too much work for him and he has other interests, he young still. I never pressured him into the sport either. He learned the same way I did when I was brought into the game. He still likes to hunt, and maybe that internal fire will eventually turn into that blazing inferno when he gets older, IDK, but I at least do know that he'll have the skill and knowledge on just 'how to' when it comes to hunting & fishing for food if his life were to completely depend on it. A thing that I did with him that I am certain when I go to kick the bucket myself one day, I believe I'll go peacefully and fulfilled, as a proud father.

People make planting corn harder than it needs to be. Actually growing any crop really because they look at commercial/industrial farming snd try yo replicate it.

Food plots especially here in southern Ohio where some things don't quite all go dormant snd stay green most of the winter, provide more long term feed unless you're just over run with rabbit, turkey and deer.

THIS!!!!! My thoughts exactly.
I would welcome banning corn with open arms. There would be very few September and early October bow kills without it. The 20 something’s would have no clue how to hunt and quit. Probably the 30 something’s too. I miss the old days of actually hunting.
I probably pay out more in corn than anybody on this site to keep deer around. But never hunted over it a single time this season.

I can admit, I've killed deer over corn, but I've always felt dirty when doing it. I'd have absolutely no issue if baiting was banned. If nothing else, I'd love to see how many legendary big buck killers stop killing big deer if baiting went away. People would have to be able to hunt deer instead of pulling them to a bigger/better pile than their neighbors. I'd rather see hunting be more about a hunter's skillset rather than a hunter's wallet/pile size.

But it will never happen.

I think that about half the people killing big bucks every year would suddenly stop killing them if they banned baiting and they followed the law. I believe there is an entire generation that skipped learning the woodsmanship thing and went straight to baiting and all the other marketable BS that comes with it. I also think that if baiting was banned we may start seeing more deer then we thought we had. There is an extremely good chance that if you dont bait and aren't seeing deer then they are at your neighbors corn pile. I hunt a couple properties that have the best habitat by far in the entire square mile area, yet we simply don't see deer. Then I speak to the neighbors and they show me the 10 shooter bucks they got on camera at their 500 lb bait pile last week.

One last thing then I'm done with this topic. You don't need to bait to take care of or help the deer. When I put corn out on the one property that I do its simply to keep them on the property and in front of my camera, which if we are being honest is for selfish reasons. When I truly want to help the deer I improve their year round habitat by doing things like killing invasive species, planting trees and managing native grasses. There is a big difference there.

If they ban baiting, what will happen to all "The ProStaffers"....

If you think about it, there will be sooo many "big buck hunters" with walls full of dandy's that will struggle to put anything close on the ground the first several years of no baiting. That tells you the power of bait and the likelihood that those same people will (likely) continue to bait secretly after only a year or two of frustration.
Likely??? I'd bet a good chunk of change that they never stop baiting even if made illegal... How would they maintain their image without bait...
