No bucks during early muzzleloader?

This is a shit deal for me because the weekend is the only time I can get evening hunts in. And it would be just my luck to have a nice one show up and eat in front of me broadside for 15 minutes.

I was upset at first but then realized that I will use Sunday to post some private land for owners, do some scouting and maybe thin out some more squirrels. I also was reactive with the news by promptly taking Monday the 14th off so I wont miss an opportunity at a buck.

Sure screwed up any plans I had to come down or to bring the family down to bowhunt as that is our only free weekend in October that NONE of us had anything we had to do or be at. We aren't planning to shoot any does off the property either as their numbers are down so it's just a wasted weekend in my book.

My brother picked a good weekend for his wedding. I won't be missing anything by not hunting.

I had planned to hunt in PA that weekend until I realized PA has no Sunday hunting. My plan as off now is to introduce to young boys 11 and 15 to deer hunting. I plan to spend Saturday on stand with one and Sunday with the other. They will be using my crossbow to hunt with.

I'm sure cheating will be very high this weekend. Many bucks will be checked in on Monday or later that week. IMO the worst idea the ODNR has had thus far.

Deer checked Monday = visit by warden = ticket = more money for the DNR. Doesn't sound like a bad deal for them.

Taking does out of the herd will have a far greater impact towards the DOW goal of herd reduction. Not really that complicated.

That may happen to a small percentage of bucks checked on Monday, most will never hear from a WO if I had to guess. Unless you have a very good WO. I called the county WO two days ago and left a message and have not heard a peep back. It's too late now to even take care of what I was calling about. Same story this spring. If they can't do their minimal responsibility of having the decency to return a call, I don't see many going out their way to do anything extra unless it is something high profile. I hope I am wrong on this, but history tells me I am very right. Of course as with anything position, some are better then others.

Herd reduction is one thing, but over harvesting (my opinion) is another. Wait until Ohio becomes the next Pennsylvania. We will all be looking back at the good ole days.

All ready experiencing that here where I hunt in Highland county, its a pretty hollow feeling. I would not wish it on anyone. Well I shouldn't say anyone, I know a couple people that need to experience it.:smiley_bril:

Effort vs reward. If you call about something like trespassers. They have to come talk to you, then find out who the trespasser was, then somehow prove it was them, then get the landowner to press charges. At the end of the day it's a ton more work for very little gain and in reality not worth their time. Now say Monday they see a buck checked in. A short drive over to the person's house, let me see the deer, ticket time. Open shut case and no reliance on someone else to be a witness or press charges. Even if the animal was shot with a bow the wardens have a scope much like doctors use and can look at the deers eyes. They judge how long an animals been dead by the cloudiness of the animals eyes and condition of it's retina.

I remember you saying a while back how pissed you were lol. Glad it worked out for ya!

I am still on the fence Bigslam. Not hunting locally makes his wedding date choice pretty okay.

Missing the Strouds Hunt because of his wedding sucks ass. I got no problem going down to deplete the deer in Athens. hahahha

Seems it would have been easier to leave th ML season where it was and either sex was legal. I realize the state and I have different agendas. I want to kill only certain bucks, the state wants nearly every deer killed. With the telecheck system the state will never have a close idea to the number of deer taken in a given year anyways.

What if a person cut the eyes out and told the WO that they were eaten as a religous practice lol

Can anyone PM me where to find the literature on it being doe only? Ive looked on the ODNR site and cant seem to find it anywhere.

They did leave muzzy season in January. It was the bonus shotgun they removed. No matter the check system the DNR doesn't have an accurate number for deer taken. Even if they did, managing live deer by counting dead deer is a vary flawed approach. Especially when you have no clue how many live deer there are.
