We just returned from putting one to bed. I may regret trying to get Mason a shot at this turkey - if he is the same one I think he is. For the previous three years, I have tried several times to kill one particular turkey. I believe as a rule, turkeys are not a very bright animal. This one may be the exception. He truly has become the "white buffalo'' to me. This SOB is on some of the most heavily hunted public land I know of. Generally, I see more hunters in there than I do turkeys and have stopped hunting it early in the season. However, this turkeyhas lured me back time and time again. Usually, he won't gobble at a call...he gobbles when he hears you walking! I've slipped in on the sucker mighty close, sat down and made a couple calls and shut him up more times than I can count. Mason has heard about this turkey all three years he has turkey hunted, and has witnessed it first hand a time or two last season. We walked in on his ridge tonight, and he sounded off. This was around 6:30, so we sat on a high spot to try pinning him down. Like usual, he roosted on the one little piece of private land there is in there. I know exactly where he is, as mentioned, I think this is my long-time oponent. Anyway, he is roosted on the west end of the ridge. Rattlesnake creek forms the eastern end of the ridge. 9 times out of 10, this guy has gone down the ridge to a wide area along the creek after pitching down. I have never set up to bushwhack this sucker because that just isn't my thing, but with Mason behind the gun, I'm willing to try anything. We are going to have to get up mighty early, as we have to sneak right around the turkey and get to the creekbottom before he does...and it is a long walk full of briars and bullcrap to walk through. By the way this bird reacted tonight, where he is roosted, and where he came from to get to the roost, I am certain it is the same one! Mason will shoot the first legal turkey to stroll by in the morning, but my GAWD, I hope it's THE ONE!
