Ohio Turkey Hunting Report

You guys are killing me. I might head to Ky and hunt Fri-sunday at a buddies place.

If I could figure out how to get our employees back to work I'd be doing the same thing!

Seth, congratulations again, and taking the tripod along was a good idea - nice pic!

Are you hunting north central Ohio this year?

Yes I was there and hunted Monday through Thursday. Only saw 3 jakes and 2 hens the entire time.

Got skunked again today in Indiana. I am beginning to think turkeys are just mythical creatures like bigfoot and the loch ness monster. I can't freaking buy a turkey right now.

Killed a Jake this morning, he thought he was a big boy so being that I have never taken a turkey he died. Now to get a tag and work on a Tom. I will get pics up soon for team 2

I know the feeling Gern...... Turkey's Freakin' Suck!

My dad and I took Kody out for the last hour of hunting time. We had a close encounter on a hot bird. He gobbled all the way in, but I made a rookie mistake and pointed him out because Kody couldn't see his head. As soon as I pointed he turned and gobbled all the way back the way he came. So, I messed it up instead of just waiting for Kody to see the bird on his own. Damn! It was eciting though.

Here's some video. You can hear how close he was, but it's hard to see him. I should've had the phone sideways while videoing. You can see my dumbass point and yes, you can bust my balls for not having gloves on. I'm still learning!

Congrats John!

I had an awesome morning for my first day out this season. Had a couple gobbling from the roost but nothing worked out. About 9am I got one to gobble just around the bend on a logging road. He was real close (within 50 yards) so I just grabbed a seat. He hammered a few more times and then shut up. I waited a while with no idea what happened. I decided to get up and continue along. You guessed it...sum bitch was standing in the road just around the corner.

I went a few hundred yards further and 2 more sounded off. I worked them just out of site for about 45 min. I decided I needed to make a move. I belly crawled through a bunch of 3 yr old growth behind a mound and blow down that they were hung up behind. I came to the edge of the blow down and see both birds with 1 in range. It was 30 yards but the growth was just too thick to try and force the shot.

All in all, it was a real fun first time out and I know just where I will set up my next chance out.

Congrats to all! Sounds like an awesome hunt for the Cottis family and huntn2! I would be happy right now just to hear one gobble. I would like to see one, but maybe that is asking too much. It has been terrible slow. Then again, when you are hunting a property you have only seen 6-7 birds on, it is tough.

Congratulations, John!
Sounds like many are having a great time...it isn't much fun when you are one of the guys having a hard time finding birds. I can't decide where I want to invest Mason's valuable skip day tomorrow. I think we are going to move quick if we don't find some roosted early. It seems the turkeys are only gobbling until 7:30 or so before their morning lock jaw sets in. If we don't hit a hot one quick, we won't have long to find another on other property before we have to rely on historically hot spots. Thinking about it is probably as fun as doing it anyway...

I went out yesterday for my first day this season. The other guy who's been hunting the farm told me where he'd been seeing them cross onto the property from the adjoining woods so I set up real close to there. About 7 I heard gobbling in other directions but not from where the turkeys were supposedly roosting all week. Little while later a hen came down into the field a few hundred yards away. I called once and she came right in like on a rope and fed around me for about an hour. After she left I had a whitetail doe almost walk on me so I guess my camo was working well, but then she scented me at about 10 feet and spent the next 10 minutes snorting around me. Around 10 I started slowly moving around the property but never got a gobble in response to any calling. My last setup of the day I had a hen respond from the other side of the hill but nothing else. All in all it was a good day, I heard some gobbles and got to see a bird and it didn't rain on me much and the real rain/sleet started right after I got in.

Good Luck Brock...... I hope Mason brings one home.

Thanks, Rick. We will need all the luck we can dig up! He just put ten rounds through his shotgun. He hit well, hopefully that will carry over in the morning if he gets a shot.

I'm learning that turkey hunting is not easy. I heard three toms each morning this weekend, but I could not get them to come close enough to see. This morning, I was able to get one of them to answer calls and split the distance, but then nothing. It's funny how close you think the birds are and how far off they really are. I learned that this weekend by being mobile and trying to get closer. The birds were on a neighboring property and in the county park. I did see about 10 hens Saturday morning. Fun but frustrating.

You guys that are hearing birds but not having success pulling them in.... Are you making any attempt to move to the bird and setup or are you just staying in a stationary setup and hoping they work to you?

We just returned from putting one to bed. I may regret trying to get Mason a shot at this turkey - if he is the same one I think he is. For the previous three years, I have tried several times to kill one particular turkey. I believe as a rule, turkeys are not a very bright animal. This one may be the exception. He truly has become the "white buffalo'' to me. This SOB is on some of the most heavily hunted public land I know of. Generally, I see more hunters in there than I do turkeys and have stopped hunting it early in the season. However, this turkeyhas lured me back time and time again. Usually, he won't gobble at a call...he gobbles when he hears you walking! I've slipped in on the sucker mighty close, sat down and made a couple calls and shut him up more times than I can count. Mason has heard about this turkey all three years he has turkey hunted, and has witnessed it first hand a time or two last season. We walked in on his ridge tonight, and he sounded off. This was around 6:30, so we sat on a high spot to try pinning him down. Like usual, he roosted on the one little piece of private land there is in there. I know exactly where he is, as mentioned, I think this is my long-time oponent. Anyway, he is roosted on the west end of the ridge. Rattlesnake creek forms the eastern end of the ridge. 9 times out of 10, this guy has gone down the ridge to a wide area along the creek after pitching down. I have never set up to bushwhack this sucker because that just isn't my thing, but with Mason behind the gun, I'm willing to try anything. We are going to have to get up mighty early, as we have to sneak right around the turkey and get to the creekbottom before he does...and it is a long walk full of briars and bullcrap to walk through. By the way this bird reacted tonight, where he is roosted, and where he came from to get to the roost, I am certain it is the same one! Mason will shoot the first legal turkey to stroll by in the morning, but my GAWD, I hope it's THE ONE!
