Ohio Turkey Hunting Report

Maybe you know how some of us have felt during the past few deer seasons now. I know it sucks. Sounds like you have been hunting hard, hope your luck changes.

Oh, I don't want to sound like I'm complaining. The problem is that I know there are birds where I am hunting....all of the spots....its the fact that I can't hear a gobbler to even know which direction to go. That's the frustrating part. I can deal with not seeing birds during a hunt. It makes the hunt a hell of a lot more enjoyable if you hear a Tom within a 1/2 mile of your location to at least give you hope. The place where I saw 4 toms yesterday has had as many as 9 toms in it nearly every day for the last month...then I go there to hunt and don't see a bird or hear a gobble.....that's hunting. Right now I am frustrated as hell but I am also a stubborn SOB and I don't give up easily!

Just had some fried wild turkey nuggets. Somehow seemed important to let you all know. They were freakin' good too! :)

Ha thats odd. So did I! I marinated them in tomato basil and garlic seasoning and rolled them in flower and plopped them in the ol' fry daddy! delicious!

I haven't a clue what KR fixed 'em in, she just showed up here at the shop with 'em and I threw 'em down my neck. They were yummy.

Went to a new spot this morning and heard a gobble a half mile away on another property. Left and went back up to the sugar woods and had 4 toms coming in and a coyote comes out in the field and they take off... Driving to work I saw a total of 4 more toms. They were loving them fields this morning...

Sat out in the mosquitoes until I was walking to the Jeep in the dark. Did not hear a single bird. No helicopters roosting, no gobbles, no dice. Good news: I still have a few hours of paperwork to do and I am sleeping in tomorrow.

I need to get my ass out in the woods, been TOO busy, but did see some action this morning and it was pretty funny how it happened.

So about 915 I'm driving around just outside of Athens for work. I see a truck pull off the road in front of me. To my right is a field where I don't have permission to hunt but see turkeys routinely.

Sure enough the guy who pulled off was a turkey hunter and about to give a couple calls from his truck by the looks of things.

I kept driving on my way back to town. 20 minutes later I get a call and I needed to head the direction I just came from.

Sure enough the truck that had pulled off the side of the road was gone, but about 10 yards from where he was there where two gobblers strutting there stuff. Could have been a coincidence, but I don't think so.

I always enjoy seeing Turks, this time just had a cool twist to it!

Went to a place I had yet to step in this season and there was 6 freakin jakes and no toms.... I don't know why I didn't record them this morning gobblin to me...lol

So close..... I've been trying to get my son a crack at his first this season without success. He has been getting up early and going out before school for a couple of hrs. and the birds have been quiet. So yesterday a came up with the plan of letting him sleep and I would go out at daybreak and if anything was talking I would call my wife on the radio and she would get him ready while I made my way back to get him. So I went out this am and sure enough one started gobbling about 150 yds from me. I made a mad dash back to pickup Andrew and when we got back up there the bird was already on the ground and heading our way. I made a few calls and he was in our lap. 18 yds in the middle of a gas well road. Andrew couldn't get his gun moved and the bird seen something he didn't like. He came out of strut and putted twice and went back the way he came. As I was letting Andrews hammer down he whispered dad there he is again. That sucker came right back and gave us quite the show for the next hr. He gobbled, strutted and spit at anywhere from 25-35 yds. Andrews max range is 15 yds and he never got a shot but he sure did learn what this turkey hunting is all about. He said that he will be with me in the morning at daylight, lol. Great day with my son even though he never pulled the trigger!

Congrats to all that have been successful.

Brock, I think the write up about Amos and yourself is classic. I turned 60 last November and have hunted all my life. Before having my open heart surgery in May of 2010 I pondered what would happen to my favorite guns if somthing went wrong in the OR. I have children and grandchildren that show very little interest in the outdoors. Amos was very blessed to have had a young man to show the simple joys of the outdoor life style. I wish I had been so blessed. I fear my favorite guns, knives and even my sacred hunting camp will be sold to someone I never had the chance to even spend a sunrise in the woods with. The thought makes me cringe.

I hunted Monday, Tuesday and Thursday this week. Saw a lot of birds and the gobbles were uncountable. After watching the birds the last two weeks I moved my pop-up to a spot that hopefully puts me in gun range.

Great story LB, it's always a good feeling when the kids get to have the excitement in the woods to continue there drive and determination . Good luck in the morning.

You guys should hear this audio denny and dale got this weekend. There were 5-6 gobblers roosted in a line. One would gobble and then it would go down the line, then back like the wave.

Sounds like a great hunt Lungbuster.

Hortonhunter- If you need an adopted son, I would be willing to play the role. Wish my Dad or F-I-L hunted. lol

I bet that was great!

I so wish we had Greg's camera with us Sunday when JB turned all 6 of those birds our way and they lit up together. It was unreal...
