Ohio Turkey Hunting Report

I have no desire to go tomorrow. I found my birds. 15 have been hanging out a couple miles down the road. No permission on that property. No wonder I haven't been seeing or hearing any.

Congrats to all that have been successful.

Brock, I think the write up about Amos and yourself is classic. I turned 60 last November and have hunted all my life. Before having my open heart surgery in May of 2010 I pondered what would happen to my favorite guns if somthing went wrong in the OR. I have children and grandchildren that show very little interest in the outdoors. Amos was very blessed to have had a young man to show the simple joys of the outdoor life style. I wish I had been so blessed. I fear my favorite guns, knives and even my sacred hunting camp will be sold to someone I never had the chance to even spend a sunrise in the woods with. The thought makes me cringe.

I hunted Monday, Tuesday and Thursday this week. Saw a lot of birds and the gobbles were uncountable. After watching the birds the last two weeks I moved my pop-up to a spot that hopefully puts me in gun range.

I sure had it made as a kid. My dad wasn't able to hunt and fish as much as he, (I) would have liked. Like most dads, he was awful busy with work. Amos was several years older, and had retired. He fished or hunted most everyday, and was always happy to have a kid tagging along. Even after I had grown up, he would always introduce me to people as the kid that pushed him to the side on the front fishing deck of his bass boat. I knew I had to get my bait out front with him or every fish I threw a bait at would have already had a hook sunk. :) He really was a great mentor and friend. Heck, when I was 8 or 9 he gave me my first baitcaster, which had also been his first one. I still have it, and that thing is more like a winch than a fishing reel! Anyway, every kid should be as lucky as I was in that department.

Best of luck on your turkey hunt! Hope it pans out for you in the morning!

I suck. Nuff said. And Greg has the HD video to prove it...

We headed to the same farm where JB and I saw the 6 stutters last weekend this morning. By 6, we had a location on 3 and heard a couple more. We made a set up near where and old road dumps into an old corn field. The birds were fired up, but we had hens between us putting and cutting. I got aggressive and talked the two smaller birds into coming our way as it sounded like the bigger bird was rounding up the hens. We got a couple gobbles up close and personal as a hen on the other side of us started cutting up. Next thing I know, two 2.5 year old birds pop out at 12 steps, camera rolling and all. They were nervous, so I didn't waste any time shooting. Unfortunately, I aimed high and missed high like an idiot. Fugg!

We heard another bird while we were picking up the dekes, so we went to the same corner JB and I watched the birds last week and laid down some sweet video of a stud all by himself strutting as hammering away.

It was an awesome morning minus the miss and the fact that I only had one shell. I ran home and grabbed the ones I left this morning, now I'm headed to the farm. Maybe I can redeem myself yet!!!

A big thanks to Greg for coming along to film! It's great to have evidence that I can't hit the broadside of a barn!!! lmao

Of course you know, you will be required to submit any/all video evidence over to the TOO crew for review... and comic relief. lmao

Glad you guys had an exciting morning over there, buddy. Hopefully you can get on another bird or two at the farm.

Heard 2 hammering in the north field at the farm as soon as I started calling. I cut up an old road and dumped right in their lap. I belly crawled to a good tree and just got situated when a big ol' red head popped in to view. I needed a few more steps as he strutted and gobbled right in front of me. Next thing I know, he runs off and leaves me wondering WTF...

Oh yeah, the 100 hp Massey with the disc coming our way. How could I miss that! Son of a beech!!! I should have stayed in bed!!!

Nice! At least you are getting in on some action Jesse. Keep it up bud, you will make it happen!

6 hunters is all i saw...got a hot lead on some public private ground if anyone is interested...jesus.....infrickinvaded...

That's not a Fugg-up....... That's a memory you can laugh at (but not today I'm sure). You're right there Jesse, just haven't got your hand in the cookie jar yet. Good Luck!

Go and knock on their door. Whatcha got to loose? I killed a Turkey with permission once and they allowed NO DEER HUNTING! Just a thought........

Might do so. Been thinking of it. I have an "in" as one of my neighbors is friends with the guy. One of those guys that looks to be mid seventies, you would think he is an average 75yr old guy living a modest retirement, but owns thousands of acres. Been waiting on the right opportunity for my neighbor to introduce us as I think this one is going to take the right approach. A "cold call" knocking on the door will probably end up a simple "No" without ever a consideration. A casual introduction from a mutual friend could be an IN though.

Phil in conversations like that, if you do cold knock, a no can be changed into a yes once you play out the conversation and play the who you know game...good luck!

Quick update here....full story tomorrow. I killed a very large Tom today after he gobbled no less than 300 times from 6:10 until 8:36........over 11" of beard and large spurs....23lbs.

Persistence once again paid off.

Congrats guys. We just returned from a great ky trip . Drove down Thursday nite. I killed one Friday morning, my buddy lost a bird Friday evening, I killed a big bird Saturday morning, then my buddy killed a big bird this morning. It was a awesome hunt this morning. Best of the season and I wasn't even the shooter

Here is my bird from yesterday....I still need to get his measurements for the contest....

Congrats Chad! Can't wait for your story! Congrats to you TOO Carpn! Wow, sounds like you had a tremendous year!

Hang in there Jesse and Charles, I'm still in the same boat. I've been hunting since 6:15 this morning and am currently sitting at the wrong end of a long tilled up field. I set up in the wrong area early this morning while hearing nothing. I got my dekes rounded back up and headed to my other sweet spot only to see a group of strutters not 60 yards beyond my tree. I backed out undetected and watched and waited for them to feed out of sight and snuck up to my tree. The big Tom just followed the hen out of the far end of the field but I presently have another gobbler feeding 120 yards out. It could get interesting soon.
