Ohio Turkey Hunting Report

I think the turkeys had a rough winter around here...wonder how many didn't survive the winter.

I had wondered the same thing, but recently I've decided they're probably ok. A few days ago I spotted 27 birds in the field next to my house. The next day I saw a group of 4 longbeards in the same field.

I had the same concern, but they probably deal with harder winters north of us every year, places like Canada and Michigan that get absolutely pounded with lake effect snow and cold.

It was raining so they hit the field. This is only 400-500 yards from our land and the farm I have permission to hunt. I saw one long beard for sure.

Heard my first gobble when I busted through some thick brush on a high spot along a high tension tower clear cut while shed hunting. He sounded like he was within a 150 yards or so. Definitely brought a smile to my face!

I was rather worried about the snow, ice and cold temps down here to. Until I had 60 plus turkeys 2 different days 2 weeks ago in my yard. Seen the big flock last week in my bottom pasture field. They seem to be in good numbers here and doing well.
Now just get my 14 yr. granddaughter out for her 1st hunt. That's more fun for me than going alone myself.

I feel real good about my food plot I put in for 2013. There was a grain plant that was in the seed I never seen before and the turkeys had a very good feed supply all winter in that 2 ac. That alone I'm sure really helped them survive.

My hunting buddy and I finished up getting permission tonight and drove around. We seen a flock of 35 or so. And these were not the same birds I seen last week. So in the last two weeks I've see roughly 80 differnt birds. They seen to be flocked up still around me. Getting excited to say the least.

I saw a few out in a field down the road from my house yesterday. That's all the scouting I've got done. Seems adequate to me. :)

The farmer who owns the land I got permission on down in Knox Co. was out at my house checking his bee hives yesterday afternoon, he keeps a couple hives with ours on our property in Stark Co. Anyway, he told me he counted about 30 birds in his field yesterday morning before he started losing track of which birds he had counted and which ones he had not. This will be my first time hunting this farm. On Google Earth it looks about as good as it gets. I'm starting to get the excited......Seventeen days.
