Reasons I don't want another current model GM

Maybe this will help Adam collect only the data he wants. This thread is dedicated to the GM owners with bad experiences.

I was never really brand loyal. Always felt that I put my money where it was best for at the time. I will add my bad experience with my 2017' GMC 1500 when I have more time.

So wide open, all GM models, all years, all reasons to not by GM?

I'll be happy to start. My uncle in law had a 1993 Silverado 2500HD, single cab, long bed, 4x4. Damn rear spring shackles rusted out and broke at 222K miles in 2006. No way I'd buy that model if I came across it, especially in salt country.

Open to all and everything. You guys want to know how many LB7 injectors I've bought over the years? 😭4

First 3yrs/20pages:

I'll be damned…6 months ago I started down this path of self destruction. 4 trans later and over $9,000 in total repairs, I'm done. I should get it back from the shop in a day or two and it will be getting all washed up this weekend and I will empty my shit from it. It'll be up on the sale block for $20,000. It's a hell of a buy for that kind of money, I'm just done with it and looking to pass the deal on to someone else. It ain't a bad truck, and should be built to go the distance for a long while now. Rust free

Wife is bitching and telling me I need a new one, a man can only take so much of that. This will be the truck I forever kick myself for selling. Dealer is has offered me $18,000 for it on trade in. I'd be taking a lot of goodies off for that price, so I'm just trying to pass the deal on.

2006' Dodge Mega Cab
3500
4x4
141,*** miles
fresh stage 3 trans
4 new rotors, calipers, pads
almost new tires
B&W turnover
basically an unmolested 5.9 cummins
bad title (stolen recover truck) some banks will still give a note on it because it wasn't totaled in a wreck

But it really doesn't matter. Drive what you like. I really like different things about each of them. I think Ford by far has the best interiors. Dodge probably has the best motors. GM has the worst front ends. I like it's look overall the best though.

My buddy loves his GMs. Hooked a 20' enclosed trailer to it with a Reatta inside. Drive to NC. Ascending hills he would start at 70 and was doing 45 and losing speed at the top. 4.11 gears and I think he had a 6.0. He is shopping again. 2014 model.

Guessing I’ll be back in the market after this evenings ride. We will see if they fix it, I really hope they do. I looked for about a year to find this truck and just put a bunch of new parts in it. But apparently I should have started with some front end work because something broke and sent me for a ride. No one injured but I’m bummed thinkjng they will junk it. Damn guardrail at around 60 after the wheel assembly went under the truck.

We’ve stuck a lot of money into Dodges over the years. Everyone said the Gen 4 was different...ate a turbo within 6 months and that was the final straw for her. Most issues on trucks before that...I’d say was my fault. I always turned them up and beat on them. All this bad luck started with a dodge.

I wasn’t happy with how this GM product handled that BB at Strouds. This new 6.7 power stroke really has seemed to fixed the issues the 6.0 and 6.4 had. The new Super Duty is damn good looking...the XLT I had for work was uncomfortable as hell though.

We will see how this all works out I guess. Even I don’t have a clue at this point.

Nothing wrong with shopping. Got to be an educated buyer and get the most bang for the buck.

Why not the 6.2L Dave? My buddy just sold his 6.0 gasser because it wouldn't pull a 20' enclosed trailer thru the mountains. Couldn't get it over 55 going up hills. 3/4 ton. I think he had a gearing issue but wouldn't admit it.

At least you mentioned ugly. Cause by God they made them horrid in 19. Stole a lot of the crap Ford was doing with the stamped tailgate, placing the emblems right where Ford has theres and that big stupid rounded front end. Ugh

You ain’t talkin’ About TD’s setup...are you?

They broke years ago like most of the other stuff attached to it [emoji23]

Kinda like the last GMC I had...$5,000 deep in parts and labor, then something else broke and I totaled it. 138,000 miles

Don’t even ask me about the dodge.

They’re all junk and buying new sounds better and better every time I throw another 5 grand around.

True story. I think I’ll be buying new from here on out.

Got lemon law papers on the 17’ gmc this week for the transmission...

The only one I’m pissed about is the tow rig...seems I just can’t find a good one. The gmc is whatever, it doesn’t leave you stranded, just isn’t smooth. Clunks around and shutters. The car...I flat beat the shit outa that thing. I hate it, so I drive it like a teenager in hopes that it blows up so I can replace it with something fun.

I’d hate to buy a brand new truck to sit in the driveway 85% of the time.

So I had my Fugger ford rant. How about my fugg GM rant? It’s had transmission issues since we bought the truck. Pretty common knowledge in the GM world that the 8 speed transmission is clunky and annoying. They don’t fail, but they just aren’t smooth or anything. Reminds me of a high performance 80’s hot rod. Damn thing shifts HARD! Hard enough to turn tires on gravel sometimes. Other times it shifts as you would expect from today’s half ton trucks.

Been in 7 times for this now and Monday they were to replace the torque converter. I go to pick it up Monday and the dealer tried to tell me they did nothing because GM said so. First pic is to prove that this is from them, second is the close up of the section this is said.

I was not impressed and kinda lost my shit as is was an all around shit day for me. Everything I touched, broke. Started the moment I walked out the front door.

Anyways, I refused to take delivery of the truck and demanded they did another flush at the very least. They did that today and we have the truck back. I will be switching dealers and will likes never return to my local place. They are well aware of this as of today and made zero effort to keep me as a customer.

IMO, GM needs to stand up and buy these trucks back that are having issues. They know they have a problem and don’t know how to fix it. They fixed it by introducing a 10 speed. If this is your fix, make me an offer I can’t refuse on a new 10 speed. I will likely be sending them an email very similar to this post here in minutes.

Rant over, I’ll keep ya’ll posted...

2017’ GMC 1500 “tow master package”
6.2L with 8 speed transmission
38,212 miles

I'd be getting rid of that clunky shifting GM the first chance I got. Shouldn't have to put up with crap like that from a $60k truck.

Seeking 1963 C-10 for my next truck. Why spend $60k when I can pay $10k, look cool, and be able to work on them. Seeking a Shortbed to tow the 63 Nova. I’ll be that guy in town that drives old cars.

If the dumb asses would flush it and replace the torque converter it would be fixed and done.

They introduced the 8 speed with the wrong fluid. Fluid draws moisture causes issues.

They changed fluids to Mobil 1 which fixed the moisture issue.

Torque converter is glazed from moisture. Replace it and fluid and all will be solid.

Issue is GM is being a dumb ass.

I bought a new Colorado in February that started shuddering at 6000 miles. Here is the latest on this transmission. Mine was corrected with the latest flush.

I’m glad you have been able to resolve the issue. Pitiful that they fight you to make it right.

List of years and vehicles are listed in the link he shared, J.

GM refuses to solve the most simple quality problems. I’ve said it on here before, but the reason I quit buying GM trucks is that I had 4 of them and the Last 3 ALL HAD THE SAME ISSUE!!! The clunk in the intermediate shaft of the steering column. And all 3 model years had service bulletins against the issue. So GM, if you know there is a problem, FIX IT! Or just loose customers. I’ll never go back.

Ugh. I was done buying GM when they sold out to the union. I like Fords. My next car will likely be an F150.

I like Chevy if they are older than old. Screw the new ones.

Why buy another problem child?

The stupid thing I did was buy this damn Ford. Her truck isn’t a failure issue, it’s an annoying thing.

The GM hasn’t cost me a dime...

The ford factory batteries lasted longer than the turbo, intercooler pipes, radiator, cab mounts, rear end...junk. Still doesn’t have 100,000 miles

Calm your tits. I’m just playing w you. All vehicles suck when your having issues. That’s why if I’m gonna spend a lot of cake on a vehicle it will be new. All break down at some point, some more than others. Hope everything works out for you. Even if you stick w a Chevy, you will most likely end up in a Ford when they pick up your broke down shit lol.

Your not old enough to remember seeing a vehicle owner jumping up and down excited because they actually got 85k miles and haven’t rebuilt the motor yet.

Well that’s a bit harsh. Plenty of used trucks out there with no major issues. The fact that this thread focuses on just a few members amongst a huge pool of members should tell you there’s nothing wrong with buying used. I’ve seen plenty of new vehicles with issues too.

I've inked one new vehicle in my life. It was a GM. It was a problem child. If it isn't older than 1988. . . You can keep your Chevy trucks. Square body and older. Like Triple Dookie said, they all break. Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota. I think my next one will be a set up like JohnR has. 3/4 or 1 ton Dodge gasser. "Maybe" a Ford gasser.

As do GM and Ram products 😂

GM a doable option? Nah. 😂

You forgot the more American made than GM and RAM.... 🤫

Jim finally ditched is 2018 Chevy 3500 and bought a ford. The Damn chevy had 18k miles on it when he bought it last year and only has about 45k on it now. The damn thing kept going in limp mode when hauling a load complaining about soot accumulation. He took it to three different chevy dealers in three states and they would just reset the code and drive it around and say its fine. The truck would run fine until he hooked a load on it and bam back in limp mode. He could sometimes keep it from triggering if he put it in manual and ran a high 4th gear. The last time he had to pull over and reset the code 40 times in 50 miles just to get it out of limp mode and to a dealership. The service manuals they have requires them to try a bunch of BS before they can just replace the DEF regen filter or some crap. Well for a man who makes his living on the road with a broke truck in BFE oklahomama that's a bunch of bullshit. Having a DOT number and being subject to inspections he couldn't just delete it. Junk ass Chevy lost another customer for life.

Yup...I will likely never own another. Highly disappointed in our 17' GMC. Damn shame you pay all that money and they won't stand behind it. Hell Toyota replaced old frames, Hyundai replaced old motors but you can get GM to replaced a damn filter. The Honda we just replaced it with was built in Alabama.

GM has a heavy hand in warranty repairs. It's getting bad. Almost like insurance companies saying you can't get the name brand until you tried the generic. Or you can't get an MRI until you've done physical therapy and jumped through whatever other hoops they require. The dealership has to follow the TSB which often requires them to try a few other less costly bandaids before they will authorize the larger repair if the mechanic doesn't follow the TSB then the dealer doesn't get paid for the repair.

I was done with GM when I had 3 of them between 01-05 year models. Wheel bearing assemblies should not fail at 30k miles on an 01 Blazer that was never off road. I had many issues similar and wrote them off. When the government bailed them out I was double done. I'm glad you've had a good run with them, Adam.

And I'm looking at the 06 more and more thinking she will be around another year or two. I need to quit looking. That is generally when a deal falls into your lap. Sort of like dating. "I'm done. Screw them all. They're all evil. . . . .well hello there sweetheart. Where have you been all my life?" 😁

I don't want 5cent or Clay to think I'm piling on the anti-GM band wagon. I had a run of bad luck. So for the record: They all suck. Sooner or later they all break. For work trucks I lean Ford or Dodge for one reason: solid front axle to hold a 9'2" vee plow.

As it stands currently we own: Hondas, Toyotas, 3 Isuzu cab overs, Ford's, Dodges, Jeeps, a Chevy II, one VW Beetle in the weeds rotting, and just bought my son a Subaru. I'm an equal opportunity guy. I'm not afraid to try them all.

I dont get in a tizzy over people's personal preferences, never have never will.....especially the ford vs chevy or domestic vs import conversation, its just fun conversation. I have been in manufacturing my entire professional career. I know how things are designed, I know how they are assembled and I know the "strategic cost reductions" they all do to increase margin. All things fail, including space shuttles due to inadequate oring swell calculations. Shit happens, but its accelerated when people abuse and don't care of their mechanical items either.

Like Dave said, do what works for you. I do fault people for bashing and not doing something about it. Just like Dave did when he bought his Ford, J/Brian/Jim on their Yotas. Bash away on GM, I dont own the company lol!

Yota’s rule Chevys drool..... 😂

Yep, people these days would come unglued if they had too put tires on every 20k miles, changed starters, alternators, water pumps a couple times before breaking 100k miles. Pulling over on the side of the road too re-gap the points. 😂😂

With a Chevy in a few months he'll need both...Ow! I bit my tongue!

I just wish I had the money back that I've spent in this thread alone... Not real happy at the moment.

I agree with them trying to do minimal work and send you on the way. When Jenna was purchasing her GMC Terrain there were a couple scratches and dirt on seats and floor mats they said sure we will take care of. Difference was her boyfriend was with her and he waited till the paperwork was drawn up and he made her/them pause to sign until they were able to inspect every single promise they made. Then she signed. LMAO he didn’t let her get the wool pulled over her eyes and have to bring it back “one day” to get everything taken care of. Dealer was clearly miffed at him. 🤣

I bought a Range AFM disabler for my 2015 Silverado. She drives like a truck now. Now, maybe my engine won't take a shit like so many have. 🤞

This ^^^. I'm considering doing this myself right now. My wife, however, is not on-board with the idea. :ROFLMAO:
