The neighbor across the street had part of a maple come down sooner than expected, it's been dying out. I've had my eyes on it with anticipation since I was getting low on my recreation burn supply. My new neighbor came over to help earlier in the week as I was starting. I offered him some of the wood two different times & he declined each time. I told him I'd be working on it moreso starting the weekend. He cut the tree up while I was at work & gave some to a friend. That rubbed me the wrong way a bit, but less work for me just the same, so I dunno.

Added some to the stockpile today. Big ash was down across my trail. Son hauled it out in the Bobcat. Probably a dump truck load. Maybe 1 1/2 loads hauled out today. Ready to cut, split, and burn.

After this past weekend lows and some complaining as well plus the risk of frozen outside furnace water lines in tank I also decided to fire up the boiler yesterday. It’s a 3 hour process to get the water temp up to 180 from just below 40 without any hitches. We got the house nice and toasty once again.

Does it affect ur system starting and stopping? Just curious with the outdoor burners. I see 78 Thursday here. In between seasons wood heat is kind of a pain.

Great question! Overall, no but I try to leave very little wood to burn during the day time which means I only load up at night just before dark when temps start to dip. I also drop our thermostat to mid 60’s so’s it won’t call for heat during the day. When it gets too warm the worst that can happen is the water temp get too hot and I’ll lose water via steam which will bellow out the overflow tube you see behind the unit. I overfilled the water jacket a tad before start up and the excess water after heating up is just trickling off the excess in the above pic. If I ever do lose water due to steam off there’s a water tap in back that I can turn to add more. Currently I’m running system to check for leaks before adding 3 qts of chemical that prohibits rust and it’s very expensive so I don’t want to lose any. Once the level drops below the nipple of my water tube in front of my unit I will pour the chemical using a funnel and tube that fits snuggly over nipple then refill enough water till water level in tube is about 1.5-2” high.

Water level dropped enough from steam blow off that I could pour 3 quarts of chemical into the reservoir via water level tube nipple.
It puts the chemical in its tank so’s it stops the rust again.... lol

She’s running great with no leaks and it’s toasty as all get out.

My boiler is topped off. Haven't fired it up yet. Placed one electric oil filled/radiator style heater in the open portion of our downstairs. Little chilly upstairs but just master bed and bath up there. Downstairs hanging at 70. I'm not lighting the boiler until I absolutely have to.

Got one dump truck load cut, split, and stacked. Brought another load over to the house today to work on at a later date. Here is a picture of the first load and a row stacked 6' tall and 20' deep. Roughly 1.5 cords. All oak.
