I get mine from Menards. I like to throw a handful of soaked hickory in with my charcoal when grillin' too, so they serve dual purpose around my place.

Man... i've got to kill a deer this weekend... hickory smoked backstrap sounds pretty good about right now!

Just lit mine up for the first time and coated everything. It was a little windy and took two tries to get some good smoke, but I think it all worked out :D

Pretty freaking cool.

PS.. Be careful around the end of the smoking. It will "puff" when the chips get low. .. Kind of like a backdraft and will shoot out a small flame like whoof!.. So Smoke your hair in the middle of the run... Don't believe me.. I give you exibit A :smiley_crocodile::smiley_crocodile:

Lovin the smoker. Jack you are absolutely right.

I almost ruined my wives hunting career before it began. The morning of her first hunt I got her out to the garage to get her smoked up and ready to go. I had already been out there smoking up all the outer layers of my clothes. Well I started smoking her up starting at the bottom and working my way up. Got to her head and was behind her. Gave a good squeeze on the bellows and wooooffffffff!!!!!! Just about lit her whole head a blaze. :smiley_couch: I am very lucky that it didn't really do any damage, but she was asking me if I singed her hair because she felt the heat from it.

Haha that would've been bad Hoyt, i'm sure that would have been her last smoking session!!

I did that once while smoking the whole in the side of my tub, thought for sure I was gonna torch my gear! LOL

Another success story:
The boy and I decided to take advantage of the end in the rain at 5:0 today and we headed out behind the house for a quick ground hunt. We positioned ourselves against a thick fallen tree with the wind in our face on a small saddle.
After sitting down I made a few soft grunts and tickled the antlers a little. Not 2 minutes later I heard a stick crack behind us and there was a little 4 point rubbing away on a tree with the wind blowing from us straight to him. He proceeded to make his rub for a couple minutes while we enjoyed the show. Kody whispered in my ear to rattle again, so I did so lightly. The little bugger stopped what he was doing and came right to us, stood broadside at 15 yards, looked around for the culprits, and slowly walked away.
He then reappeared right in front of us about 20 minutes later after we grunted and hit the can.

I know he's a young and inexperioenced buck with sex on his mind, but to be 15 yards downwind of us is just another feather in the Smoker's cap. Especially when you have a fidgety 10 year old with you.

Who ever was in the chat room the other night and said to shake it gently to get it smoking good - that helps.

It seems like the three times that I've fired it up it's been very windy, and though twice at night, I can't really 'see' the smoke. Everything smells smoky though. I've got everything that I used. I had just my fleece on Thursday morning after smoking it for the first time and Redcloud said it was strong...

I do have two complaints about the smoker though. And a question. Complaints: the model that I have (a new one, I'm assuming, I got it two weeks ago) has a clip over the bellows to hold it shut. Like I'm going to not lose that the next time that I use it! The second would be the metal grate in the bottom. The other night I emptied it on our burn pile in the dark and of course dumped it out with the smoldering chips. It was still there two days later lol. And it does work with out it. I wish it was hinged or something like a trap door...

My question would be - what do you do with the smoker once you've used it and are about to head into the woods?? I dumped my chips onto the ground the other day and they were pretty well out by then and just sitting in dirt so I didn't stomp them or douse them with water, which I was prepared to do. The smoker was still a little hot and I didn't know what to do with it. Adam said that he hung his on his bumper. Some of the spots I could do that or just put it next to the truck on gravel or something, and I don't want to melt my plastic bedliner in my truck (which has a hard tonnanu on it)... So what do you do?

The clip. Might as well have fun and throw it in the woods. You'll lose it anyway. It was for shipping so it could it in a smaller box. Not really for storage. The metal grate will fall out sometimes. Just watch for it. Mine hasn't fallen out in a while when dumping the chips. Probably because it's so gummed up. The hot smoker. Place a flat stone walkway paver in the back of your truck and set it on that. Or even just an old 1'x1' ceramic tile.

If you aren't getting enough Smoke it's not lit good enough. I place my smoker on it's bellows and lay the nozel of the torch in the smoker. I get most of the chips glowing then tip it up for a couple moments. Place a small amount of chips in to replace what i burned away. Close the lid and work the bellows. Should be rolling.

just open your smoker back up and let the chips reignite and burn out. that way you wont have that much creasote on the pipe funnel end

I like to leave it closed and let it burn out. That way it seals itself closed and I get the pleasure of reheating it with my torch while calling myself a idiot to break the seal.

Have you or anybody else tried a chunk of that Chimney Sweeping log for your fireplaces to clean your smokers ? It is suppose to dry and flake that stuff off but IDK if it really works or not.

Just burn it out with the torch. It will fluff up to ash. ;)

That tile/paver idea sounds like a good one. This boy has torched an acre and a half of straw stubble before and I'd rather not do it again!

Milo if I had a frigggen clue what 'creasote' was, I'd do just that. Not going to lose any sleep over it in the mean time!

That black crap that builds up inside the smoker. Same stuff that's in Chimneys.

Everyone seems to have their own personal opinion. Some like to smoke, some dont. It works for some, it doesnt work for some others.

Here is my take on it. I have over 300 dollars in scent lock clothing. Clothing that was meant to keep my human odor in and was meant to smell like absolutely nothing. I dont really have any desire to make it smell like a raging forrest fire! I have been pretty serious about bowhunting for several years now. I have done a lot of trial and errors! THe thing that works the best for me and has always works the best for me has been to smell like nothing.

I have used earth scent wash, with matching dryer sheets, and scent wafers, and earth scent spray. From multiple different companies I may add. My success was pretty good, but not perfect. THe deer didnt know i Was a human, but still came in with their guard up trying to figure out what was going on. I have built oak, cherry, and maple fires in my back yard and have smoked the snot out of hunting clothes (not my scent lock). Had much of the same results, deer didnt know It was me, but still knew something foreign was in the woods!

I feel as if the method I use is what works best for me. I also feel as if I have mastered it over the years of trial and error. I have a very strict plan that I follow with all my clothes and hunting apparrel. It starts with keeping towels to dry off with after a no scent shower in a tote that have been washed with no scent soap. THere there are also regular street clothes that I wash with no scent soap and keep in a seperate tote for when I drive to the stand! I have experimented with almost every brand of no scent spray and soap you can get your hands on and have my set of favorites! I am confident that I can hunt deer and now matter what the wind decides to change to, I am not gonig to get winded. I havent been, and I feel as if I wont be. So long as I follow my typical strict routine.

Again it boils down to personal preference. I just know what works for me and what I am not gonig to change. I may change if it stops working, but I dont see that ever happening unless deer start figuring out a scientific way to find me via heat sensor. In which case no scent elimination will ever work!
