TOO Garden Thread

Right there with you guys on waiting till memorial day! Also to keep weeds out the best is just laying down some hay or straw in between the rows pretty thick and the thinly spread in between plants of doing a raised mount to plant on. Worked great for me just do it right after planting to prevent any weeds from starting.

I sprayed last weekend to kill off the new area what few weeds were up. Last night I took the propane tank and rosebud out and burned everything off. Later tonight I will break out the tiller for the first round of tilling. I plan on getting some lettuce and onions going this weekend in the smaller side plot

My garden is pretty much ready to till up. It's been a little too wet lately, the few days that I've been home to get it tilled. I hope to get it planted a couple weeks before Memorial Day?

So Im now shooting for Sunday tilling. I never got my cow manure so Im not rushing anything. I will wait till the week of May 20th before I plant. Usually we are fairly safe to go by then

Cleaned out the barn tonight and laid it to the garden. Tilling it one last time tomorrow evening, then planting next weekend.

Got my peanuts out today and a few broccoli and cauliflower plants in also. My onions have came through good still waiting on my potatoes to come through yet. My lettuce is up and my asparagus I started last year is starting to look good. Couldn't be happier with the way things are going so far.

We got some fertilizer tilled in and our onions and radishes planted yesterday. The rest will go in next weekend if the weather cooperates.

Man! What a great weekend! I tilled my garden Friday night after work. I planted 12 Hungarian wax, 4 jalapeño, 8 bells and 8 sweet banana. 24 maters, 50 onion sets, 2 rows of green beans and 2 rows of corn. I will plant my Zukes and squash next weekend and more corn around Memorial Day.

Covered the gardens in chicken poop and sand mix this morning. Tilled it around noon and let the sun dry it a bit. This evening I went ahead and got my corn, yellow beans, green beans, peas and onions in. Next weekend I'll plant my tomato plants and peppers. I have enough room for a few different peppers, thinking hot banana, green and red bells, jalapeño and maybe something interesting. We will see I guess.

I finally got something done on our small garden. Yesterday I dumped a trailer load of old horse poop and got it tilled today. Hoping to plant some onions, corn and a few other seeds tomorrow then hopefully start getting some plants in soon. Weather has finally been cooperating!

Yeah I do. I had to cover mine for a week. The new plants really took off under the plastic. My beds are drying out fast without rain. My peas finally came up but it m behind on tomatoes and peppers. This is a great year for Apple and pear blooms that's for sure! The bees were swarming on mine yesterday.

Planting day is this Saturday, so I'm gearing up for the big day! Stopped at Tractor Supply and picked up 16 tomato cages for my roma, cherry, and grape mater plants. At $1.99 a piece, it was a good deal that will last me a while. Our local feed mill had a steal on 6' white oak tomato stakes, so I picked up 65 of those for $50. That will stake down all the peppers, mater and bush beans I have planned. Also grabbed a few more plants. So here is the list...



Romaine and Buttercrunch lettuces.
Corn: Silver Queen and Peaches & Cream.
Pole Beans: Blue Lakes and Kentucky Wonders.
Celery, Squash, Broccoli, Carrots, Radish, Pumpkin, and Cabbage.
Onions sets and bulbs in Sweet, Spanish, Red and Candy, along with some Shallots.
Tomatoes : 40 plants that include Celebrity, Early Girl, Super Steak, Jet Star, Roma, Grape and Cherry.
Peppers: 40 plants that include Cayenne, Sweet Banana, Jalapeno, Hungarian Wax, Serrano, Super Chili, Red and Yellow Bells

Nothing like starting out on the big side of things!

The weather is looking real nice! I want to plant this weekend but we have to hold out. Below 40 will definitely happen atleast one more time up here, no reason to chance it.

I'm not going to stagger. I plan to make salsa, relish, can, freeze and preserve like a mad man. I realize it'll be madness, but I learn the hard way. Plus we plan on sharing a lot with family, friends and coworkers.

Dont think its madness, as long as ya got the help. Im always amazed at how much my FIL produces for salsa and canning. An extras always seem to find a home.

For the past 3 years I've been tweaking my salsa recipe and we finely have it down. I also make my hot pepper mustard and am going to try hot pepper jelly this year. I really look forward to canning and eating our goodies out of the garden each year.
