Maybe you could try some of that weather stripping for windows and put it on the inside to seal the doors. And duct tape for the vents like finallyshedded said.

That's what I'm thinking TOO. Weatherstrip and covering the vents in the top of the doors and maybe cutting a vent in the very top to maybe draw the smoke up through the entire locker. I put a boot hanger in there tonight and I'm gonna get one of those cheap spring loaded rods to hang the clothes on while they are smoking.

Don, you are over-thinking this thing. I smoke myself before going to the woods. I don't care for the smell of clothing that has been saturated for long periods. Everyone does it their own way, but if those garments choke you when you put them on, keep in mind it doesn't have to be that way. :)

In not meaning to over think it. It's just I don't want to have the entire house to smell like smoke because my garage is connected underneath my house. I'm hoping the use of the locker will keep the smoke more "confined and concentrated" where I want it and give me a place to possibly smoke everything at one time. Plus give me a place to keep my bow and pack.

If you need help overthinking something. . . .I'm your man. lmao

You placing the locker in your garage? Outside?

Reason I ask is because I was thinking about your need for a vent. If you feel the location you are putting it will require a vent, AND you want it airtight, I have an idea. Get some 1 1/2" PVC such as what you would use for drain waste and vent in a plumbing situation. At the top of it you can plumb in a female adapter. They sell "Ventless adapters" for situations where you add on a sink, tub, etc., but cannot tie into the other vents in your plumbing due to whatever reason such as studs/drywall in the way. It is not always up to code in some plumbing situations, but they sell them because they have a purpose. What I don't know is if they are like a one way check valve or if they just slow down the flow of funky air.

I guess the other option is to plumb in a makeshift p-trap. This would allow the smoke to exit the locker but wouldn't completely fly out the top of the locker without soaking the clothes in a nice layer of smoke.

How ya like that for overthinking it Don? rotflmao

They say great minds think alike. Then again, I think crazy people do too. lmao

You could use plumbers putty around the opening to help seal it off as well. If there are some cracks you can't quite get to seal up there are other solutions I was thinking about. I was an installer for wireless internet receivers for awhile. I wasn't the general contractor though and he was the one who purchased supplies. Whenever we drilled through the foundation to route the wire to the router there was a black tape like material we wrapped around the cable to fill the excess space. (Had to drill the hole larger than the cable to fit the female end on the cable thru the hole.) I bet Redcloud uses similar stuff installing cable. It was about as wide as electrical tape but maybe 1/16-1/8" thick and stuck to itself. You could use it on the seams or in the vent holes on the fronts of the doors if duct tape doesn't work.

I have used the stuff you are talking about. I think you are talking about butyl tape.

Ok smokers, I have never done this but thinking about it. The question I have; Do any of you take a burnt log, lets say hickory if you are using hickory smoke and either set it in your stand or down wind of stand before the season starts?

You're over thinking it buddy. The deer literally could care less if they smell smoke. No need to sensitize them. I haven't seen one sneak out yet much less haul balls because they got a whiff. When they smell it they'll sniff the air, then you'll literally see them disregard it. It's strange to explain what they do. But if deer could put their hands up and shrug their shoulders that's how obvious it is when they blow it off and go back to relaxing.

They will stop. Put their nose in the air and waive their head around as they sniff. Then they'll look around trying to catch the wind better. They may sniff again. But what they do next is comical. They wag their tail, put their head down, and go about their business never giving it another thought.

Yep. The analogy of them shrugging their shoulders is spot on. The buck I killed in 2008 stood down wind for a while sniffing the wind, dropped his head, flicked his tail, and promptly walked to his death. He was one of a dozen deer to die in a similar manner since I started using smoke...

I agree with jackalope and BH1023. Some of them stop and get curious. Some of them don't even hesitate because they are accustomed to smelling smoke in the air. Some of them double check the air with their noses. So long as you don't get busted moving while their nose is in the air, you are golden. If they pause or hesitate it isn't a scared look. They don't look skiddish. It is more of a curiosity body language, then they move on like Jackalope said. Good analogy.

How much smoke does one put on everything?

Like Brock. I don't pre-smoke. First time after a wash I get the smoker rolling and smoke each piece as I put it on. After that its a quick smoke when I get to the property. Inside and outside of my Jacket, pants, boots, hair, hands, pack, and gear. Two medium handfuls if chips. One to get it going and another on top before smoking. Just like spraying down with liquid scent killer. You want to be covered as being drenched isn't a requirement. Drenching doesn't hurt. But it's overkill in my book.

I'm gonna fire mine up this weekend and smoke my locker just to have something to smoke and experiment with it. I think I am gonna wait for my first trip to the woods to smoke my stuff TOO. I am curious to see how the smoker works and want to just get the feel of how it works. Plus I think its just cool as hell!

I smoke the crap out of my stuff. Do so just before each hunt. Each layer as I put it on. I suppose by the time the chips are about burnt out I am close to being fully dressed and leave.

You and I are hooking up and making THE SUPER SMOKER! With Brock's smokers and our extraordinary understanding of ventilation and smoke flowage and all that good stuff we will be millionaires!

I do the pre-smoke just as a time saver and at that time pay special attention to the insides of my coats and pants. I do agree that it can be overdone as I have gone overboard and smoked a couple batches on the same set of clothing. Won't do that again as it just seemed too much. Nothing like smoking up everything the morning you are headed out though...if you have the time and didn't oversleep LOL!! :smiley_baby:

The morning we killed this one, Sean was running late and arrived at my house 30 minutes after I'd told him to. I felt rushed, and just about skipped smoking up as I hate to miss a sunrise. We did however fire the thing up and spent 10 minutes getting ourselves and gear smoked. I pointed him to the stand just as the sun was cresting the horizon and went on to mine. He shot this deer at about 8. It came in down wind and never lifted it's head. He shot him at 12 yards. It's worth the few extra minutes, even if you are a little late to the tree!
