I've had Mason out all day. We saw a half rack, 6 doe, and a deer Mason has been seeing for the last year or so. Its a pretty special deer, apparently. In fact, I'm going to brag on Mason in another thread!

Was hunting with the muzzy today. Working my way up the edge of a crp field when a doe came through the tall grass at about 30 yards at a pretty good pace. Had about 2 1/2 seconds to the scope on her before she got into the brush. It took only 2 seconds. Unfortunately, I should have used that other half second to realize that with a scope dialed in at 100, you need to aim really low at thirty. Shot right over her. That was the only deer I saw all day, other than a six point that a guy about 200 yards from me shot.
I helped two different guys load up bucks today. When you have your antlered tag filled already, you can't ask for anymore than this on the Saturday of gun season. One guy more a "deer season" friend, but a friend none the less. The other is a pretty good buddy. We do a lot of hunting together among other things. Not uncommon to cut firewood with him or bounce business ideas off each other or share in laughs or frustrations in life together. Felt really good to be able to share in these experiences with these two. Sorry I can't share any pictures.
I'm headed out to jump shoot some geese, then prep the duck blind for next weekend. Then we are headed to a 72 acre piece of private ground I have that is surrounded by WNF on 3 sides and a 250 acre managed farm on the other. I've been waiting all year to scout it with a gun in hand. Hoping between the private ground and 1,100 acres of WNF, I can find some quality spots for next year. We'll be muzzleloading there as well.
Mason and I were just out in our little woods. We only own 6.5 acres and it's like an island of woods lost in a sea of corn fields. Mason started a bait pile out there a few days ago and we went to check the cam (four does there last night). It sounded like a war over on the neighbor's place, I'd guess they are doing a drive and finding plenty of targets! I hope they are all coyotes...
Does Dean do Pheasants Hunts during gun season?? If not, they were putting on a heck of a drive that way this morning. I heard close to 30 shots in a couple hours from the same general area. I winced every time i heard one. If they were deer hunting, I can't imagine there was much hitting going on. Or at least good hits.
