I think its time the state cracks down on income fax collection on property leasing just like apartment rentals. If a landowner leases for hunting, the hunters should be forced to issue a 1099 for the amount of the lease so the pers0n getting rich pays federal and state income tax. I doubt anyone pays taxes on the lease money they collect. A state law requiring those who pay a lease should require a $5mm dollar liability policy in case they shoot toward other property.
Who gets rich off of a lease?

That is what I'm saying. I'm all for an increase across the board, but I'm going to want to see what my increase is going towards. And from what I've been told, this is exactly why it keeps getting shot down when it goes to vote. ODNR isn't giving a good enough reason for a raise. They are trying to get a raise approved though.

They can't think of enough reasons to raise license costs? They must be the dumbest group of people on the planet.

1. Fuel costs have increased (over last decade), they have guys driving trucks around
2. Standard inflation of the dollar
3. Supply and Demand as the state of Ohio has grown in popularity as a big buck place to hunt.
4. Budget to increase spend for my GW, since we only have one per county

I am not calling you dumb Giles, just saying my gosh if that is true that is pathetic.

I don't recall the guys name, he was some governor or something out of Cincy and that was exactly what he told a group of us and no one from the ODNR even held their heads up to try and defend. The guy straight called them out when the topic was brought up by a hunter.

BTW, my skin is a lot thicker than that and I didn't take it personal.

I dont think they will ever raise the nonresident fees, hell they will raise the resident fees again before nonresidents.
I myself would not mind if they raised them to be more like Iowa which is $551.
I have no problem with nonresident hunters coming here as i have gone to other states to hunt which cost much more than what we charge.
Also wouldn't mind if we had a draw and preference point system like Iowa does.
Our state is always mentioned with some of the other midwest states for our big bucks why not start charging for it.
The diehard dedicated deer hunters are still going to come here whether we charge $100 or $800 a tag..

According to realtree, Ohio is the number 2 destination for an out of state whitetail hunt. Iowa didn't even rank that high and look what they charge. I'd be fine with a draw and a limit on NR hunters like Iowa does.

yep!

When I lived in Texas, had lived there for 6 months but wasn't a "resident " yet. I was paying city tax tho.... The NR fee was over $300 for the license, then something stupid on top for tags.....

And there in lies part of the problem. P&Y ranked it as number 6 for entries. I'm sure realtree factored in location, license price, etc to rank Ohio higher but people will just interpret it as #2 for Whitetails.

So I just gave my students their current event assignment about the division in the Republican party and I read this meme and start laughing out loud, my kids are staring at me like I'm a weirdo right now.

Wanna talk about party division. Bernie wasn't supposed to make it past the first primary state. If it wasn't for Hillary buying superdelegates she would be in serious trouble. Still might be. Especially since the DOJ said today that her email investigation is a criminal investigation.

thats tommorows assignment, my kids are just worried about keeping their free stuff!

Ok. First post on here.

First a little background.

1. Born, raised, and still live in Western PA. I have hunted for almost 28 years now. I have 3 kids 10-14 in age that all hunt.
2. Recently just bought property in SE Ohio to hunt. Started out looking for land to lease, but for that cost it made more sense to just buy my own.
3. Didn't really buy it for the "big buck" reason. We are looking to Ohio for the longer seasons and Sunday Hunting. With work and a family as you know there is alot of stuff going on, so this will greatly expand our hunting.

Now a few thoughts on raising license fees.
1. It is a touchy subject. I am sure that alot of the hope is a more expensive license will deter some out of state hunters. Don't feel bad because in PA many hunters want a NR increase to do the same. LOL. The one thing to remember is that not all out of state hunters are "rich guys" just looking to kill buck. How many out-of-state hunters are actually former Ohio Residents that come back home to hunt with family for a week or a weekend? or still own land in Ohio, but had to move due to work? It is likely more to affect this group than the "rich guys" that throw big dollars on a lease. After all with everything else that they buy another couple hundred bucks wouldn't be that bad.
2. I have never believed that any wildlife agency should be run like a business. In other words the price of the license shouldn't be set to maximize dollars brought in. It should be set as low as possible so that there is enough money to spend to keep the agency afloat and providing the necessary services. With dwindling hunter numbers across the nation, we are going to need as many people as possible to keep our voice heard in important legislative matters.

The other factor is that if a license was $10,000 per year, some of us are like a heroin addict and would be selling ourselves to raise enough money to buy one. LOL.

3. Leasing of property is becoming big in PA as well. We are probably lagging a little behind OH because of our big public hunting grounds, but it is becoming a big thing. You see/hear alot of complaints about guys losing ground. You can't blame property owners/farmers for doing it though. Leasing will continue to grow and no change in licenses is going to stop that.

4. Also if you want to see high hunter densities then you probably should come to PA as we have the highest in the country I believe.

welcome to the forum!

raising license fees for NR or even resident hunters to the point that the DNR is more profitable and keeping up with current times. IF that chases someone away from hunting completely that you feel its going to decrease our voice as hunters......that person wouldn't have been much of a voice for us anyways.

congrats on farm purchase, where about you located in SE Ohio?
