Ok. First post on here.
First a little background.
1. Born, raised, and still live in Western PA. I have hunted for almost 28 years now. I have 3 kids 10-14 in age that all hunt.
2. Recently just bought property in SE Ohio to hunt. Started out looking for land to lease, but for that cost it made more sense to just buy my own.
3. Didn't really buy it for the "big buck" reason. We are looking to Ohio for the longer seasons and Sunday Hunting. With work and a family as you know there is alot of stuff going on, so this will greatly expand our hunting.
Now a few thoughts on raising license fees.
1. It is a touchy subject. I am sure that alot of the hope is a more expensive license will deter some out of state hunters. Don't feel bad because in PA many hunters want a NR increase to do the same. LOL. The one thing to remember is that not all out of state hunters are "rich guys" just looking to kill buck. How many out-of-state hunters are actually former Ohio Residents that come back home to hunt with family for a week or a weekend? or still own land in Ohio, but had to move due to work? It is likely more to affect this group than the "rich guys" that throw big dollars on a lease. After all with everything else that they buy another couple hundred bucks wouldn't be that bad.
2. I have never believed that any wildlife agency should be run like a business. In other words the price of the license shouldn't be set to maximize dollars brought in. It should be set as low as possible so that there is enough money to spend to keep the agency afloat and providing the necessary services. With dwindling hunter numbers across the nation, we are going to need as many people as possible to keep our voice heard in important legislative matters.
The other factor is that if a license was $10,000 per year, some of us are like a heroin addict and would be selling ourselves to raise enough money to buy one. LOL.
3. Leasing of property is becoming big in PA as well. We are probably lagging a little behind OH because of our big public hunting grounds, but it is becoming a big thing. You see/hear alot of complaints about guys losing ground. You can't blame property owners/farmers for doing it though. Leasing will continue to grow and no change in licenses is going to stop that.
4. Also if you want to see high hunter densities then you probably should come to PA as we have the highest in the country I believe.
