I went to see the pups on Sunday and they look good. Clearly they are not 100% lab and the current investigation leads me to believe they were sired by of all things, lab/rottweiler mix. The blacks have the tell tale white spot, so we know there's something else in them. Although mom is American lab, the pups have massive English-style heads. Although not optimal for a duck dog, I'm not passing on one of these pups and actually, might get a chocolate. I know mom has great drive and instinct, so I'll do my best with training, which helps me learn and we'll make a run at it. Worst case, I have another great dog that doesn't hunt, not a big deal. I'm going to hold off on breeding Lulu until next year, but eventually will make a 3rd run at a duck dog regardless of how things go with Gunnar. Pretty excited!

Finally bought a good kennel for hauling dogs in the truck. Definitely a nice investment.

Got pics of Otis yesterday. Paperwork is done. Otis is in Ohio. Supposed to meet halfway on Saturday to pick him up. Kids are pretty excited. So are the wife and I. House is missing something without a dog in it. Hoping this fostering of Otis works out well.

Get on YouTube and watch all of Freddy Kong’s videos. You will pick up stuff that will help your training. Good luck and take it Day by day. I don’t know everything, but know enough to be helpful. All you have to do is ask.

Thanks man. I will probably be sharing the journey here, so you guys will get a chance to line me out! I did pretty well with Remington for a first time training and have the obedience thing down pretty well at this point having trained 10 or so dogs in that regard. It's the advanced field training that I need to improve on. And when we get the boat out, that's all new to me. But, I know it takes reps and time, which I am committed to. And like much of the world, I'm a YouTube expert, so I'll be watching a lot of videos! Thankful to be a visual learner in this day and age!

Good stuff all around.

How'd you land on the name Jesse?

I was raised to give dogs "strong names" so that it was easier to command their attention. I tend to agree with that. My mom was big on single-syllable names because they sound "harder" to a dog. I'm not sold on the one-syllable thing, but do believe a strong name is a must. I've always like Viking stuff (I'm 10% Viking) and when I was researching dog kennels, I was looking at buying a Gunner Kennel. That spelling was too obvious for a gun dog, and a little fan-boy-esque if I bought one, so I searched Gunnar and got: "The name Gunnar means fighter, soldier, and attacker, but mostly is referred to by the Viking saying which means Brave and Bold warrior (gunnr "war" and arr "warrior"). " That bolded part is what I want from a dog. I want a badass that breaks ice, swims in the river in January, and attacks geese like a Viking warrior. Text that line to my wife and she said "love it:love:" so you know, the dog's name is Gunnar now.

Forgive me for being lazy. Had you planned on hunting over LuLu? I don't remember. If so. . .you missed the boat on a badass hunting dog name. Lol

Only if it happened by accident. We chose her strictly as a pet and because we were looking for a "vanilla" colored lab. And I let a 4 year old name her, so her name sucks. 😂 However, the way I yell it and "bellow" the second "lu", it carries well and does get her attention.

She has zero retrieve drive and was a prime candidate for force fetch, but I wasn't wasting my time after see her early in the game. She'll run down geese and pin them down, but she ain't bringing anything back to me. Great with the girls and very obedient, but extremely timid and absolutely not a hunting dog.

When I was younger I had two beagles that I used for rabbit hunting. I named one foxy and the other lady. When calling the dogs over to a jumped rabbit I’d call out foxy lady. Ended up giving them away because they were just plain too slow. It would sometimes take them an hour to bring a rabbit back around. The only time they ran fast was when they got on a deer!😂

Copy that. Couldn't remember. Sounds like she has a mission: bring the family loads of love. Can't deprive a dog of it's calling.

A Chesapeake bay retriever is all of this and then some. Negative side is they are generally a one person dog, hard headed, not easily trained and don’t take too kindly of other strange dogs. If you get one dialed it, there ain’t no weather that can stop them and have no quit.

I almost bought one before getting pearl. Dude was a douche bag, wanted a deposit, I said I will come look at them at 5 weeks home and if I wanted one I’d pay him then. I wasn’t driving 10 hrs one way to leave a deposit. Oh and he says I can’t pick it up till 8 weeks. Told him politely to GGF! Best decision I made, I have a jam up dog now.

I shouldn't sell her completely short on the hunt drive as I barely tried with her on that front. Maybe with some consistent, hard work, we would have made something of her. That said, I'm most proud of her for behavior like she just demonstrated. Behavior that took almost 5 years to get from Remi.

She's been in the backyard since 7AM. I had K drag her bed from the laundry room where she sleeps, to here which is her spot when we're inside. Lulu was as excited as you'd imagine a lonely, cold dog would be. K opened the door with Kenna next to her and there was no jumping, snipping, licking, running around, or knocking the baby down. She just assumed this position immediately. Her finesse around the girls is 100xs what Remi had!

She'll make good pups someday.

Beautiful dog, she sure is white tho. Not a big deal up there since it snows a good bit during the season. Down here she would flare birds a mile away.
