Well, I just did some reading and I honestly believe that the groups of jakes on my place are beating up on the gobblers. Strength in numbers I guess? I'm going to have to adjust my strategy and figure out where the big boys are hiding with the hens. TOO many mornings with groups of jakes coming to the calls. I thought I had a lone bird located late Saturday morning about 400 yards from where I chased the group of jakes off and was just starting to work him and the same group of jakes came into my setup and headed down to where he was gobbling. Then the lone bird shut up and it was all over.

Aggressive Jakes can be a real problem.

Take a couple of newbies in there and let them kill a couple of those jakes

Killed a nice WNF bird this morning, over 25 lbs , 10 1/4 beard, 1 1/4 spurs. Worked this old dude a couple of times last wk.Afew gobbles on the roost , acouple on the ground then silence. Yesterday I set up on point bout halfway downAt 9:04 he came into roughly 60 yards and strutted for an hour and then left.I walked down there, looked it ove rand found a place for this morning.Today no roost gobbles, nothing on the ground. So I snuck to the spot I picked yesterday and called a little after a while I heard a gobble way off.Took about a half an hour and I saw him strutting.I hit the call again and he moved up toward where he was strutting yesterday, put the hammer down at 21 steps.

I’m not opposed to shooting a Jake, if he acts right coming in. Today I shot one by accident. I’ve been trying to kill a particular bird for four mornings now. He’s got an entire flock of jakes and hens with him all the time and they are sticking together all day. I had him at 25 yards or so this morning along with half a dozen jakes. He went behind a hickory tree and when a red white and blue head came out, I shot it. Wrong bird. They were in a greenbrier patch and I flat out shot the wrong bird. Lol. Oh well, it was fun and I’ll try him again in the morning.

Just heard the first gobble of the morning. Unfortunately, someone else is also hunting the farm today and I have no idea where they went. My plan is to sit on a field edge where the birds have been coming out the last several mornings. I’m sure I’ll get to hear a shotgun blast before long. :)
