Crazy awesome morning. Nothing to show for it. Had them gobbling on roost within 50-100yds. Had multiple gobbling on roost several hundred yards south of me. I sat quiet. Thought they had all pitched down and gone quiet so I let out a few yelps and went quiet. More gobbles. Next thing I know a hen pitched down over my left shoulder with a tom behind her. Guess they hadn't all pitched down yet. haha

Let the O/U bark at 72 paces. Dropped the bird. Text Bigslam a pic of my OU broken open with a shell ejected. He called and we chatted. I look over several minutes later and the bird was gone. Lessons learned? Go fetch your bird immediately. Screw Chad. He is bad mojo. lmao FWIW, I did find 2 small feathers and a few drops of blood at impact location. Followed tracks off the field to jump the bird and he takes off running.

I searched the area high and low with no luck at all. At that distance I must have just knocked the bird out or something. Unbelievable. After searching I figured I had the area all buggered up. Walked to another section of the property. It was the only way I felt the turkey might have gone if he wasn't dead. Sat down to think about things. An hour had passed since I had shot the bird and searched. Sitting in the new location, I said a prayer. Asked for some sign of what to do. Before I had raised my head I hear a gobble within 100yds. I heard gobble after gobble and decided to let out some soft purrs. Then I went quiet again. He worked a semi circle around me for about an hour. Got within 50yds but it was a different bird. After my first encounter, I didn't want to take a risky shot through the trees. Once he was gone, I backtracked all the areas again to look for the bird I had shot. There was zero sign of the bird anywhere. I don't see how he survived, but I don't know where else to look. I have to believe he is alive.

Very exciting morning even if I came home empty handed.

Dang sorry to hear that! From the sounds of Joe you need to get ahold of Alex for when you knock one down lmao he may even get recruited for duck season lol

72 paces a long shot don't ya think

Dropped like a sack of bricks. I don't know. I'm fairly new to all this turkey business. We simply don't have a lot of them around. Feel bad about what happened.

Newbie mistake I guess. If I watch a deer drop, I let them lay and make sure they are done. If the thing dropped when I shot it and didn't move. . . I figured dead was dead. Like I said, tough lesson learned.

Unlucky Phil. It happens. Shake it off. Sounds like an exciting morning though. Whenever I shoot I am a split second behind at a full sprint Lol.

Thanks Marcus. I don't mind making a mistake. I won't make the mistake twice. I just hate seeing an animal go to waste. I hope he survives.

And yes, when I noticed he was gone I took off like a rocket. Probably looked more like a preying mantis on a sprint, but in my mind I WAS A ROCKET! (Darn near pulled a hammy!) :smiley_crocodile:

Had an eventful morning in Oregon. Went to the spot I'd heard turkeys my first hunt on the property and set up before first light. This is only my second hunt trying to call on my own. I set up with my girlfriend and as soon as I let out a few yelps I had what sounded like around eight turkeys start gobbling about 300 yards up the draw. I played hard to get and would only call every couple minutes, waiting for quite a few of their gobbles in between. I had them so worked up they were gobbling every five seconds but they were taking their time getting closer. Right when it sounded like they were 100 yards away I here a few wing flaps and the woods are silent. I don't know if a coyote spooked them or what but there was no way they could've seen me or the decoys yet. I could hear them in the distance after five minutes but my gf was shivering uncontrollably so I had to head out
