Funny thing about Old Peter is understanding railroad regs and procedure is not walk in the park, those dudes that are dispatch and yard masters been training and in The railroad for a longtime. Bad bearings on cars are fairly common and should been caught by the conductor on the initial departure check. It may have not appeared hot. Peter won’t have clue, he know nothing about hazmat or railroads lol
But he‘s one woke mofo! That’s why he’s in that position…. There’s a meme of him and his husband on a swing with the EP disaster in the background….

Appalachia
There are of downstream impacts of this quite literally, and figuratively. We have 50 miles of rail in our county and it's absolutely vital to our local manufacturing economy. If any drastic regulations arise from this, it could have major implications for a lot of Appalachian communities. Overall, a terrible situation no matter how you look at it.

I just want to make sure I understand sequence of events, tanker car catches on fire derails. Other tanker cars derail but do not spill, but it’s decided that they should open these wrecked tankers and let chemicals into the air/burned. Is this correct?

Yes, but when you understand how liquids stored under pressure behave it makes much more sense. It’ll take me awhile to explain it and I don’t have the time right now. I’ll try to later.

I figured hazmat spill experts who have advanced degrees in chemical engineering or whatever weighed their options, its just crazy to think that the best option is to release them into the atmosphere. You would think they would have created a better solution somehow over the 20 to 30 years with the advancements in science.

From the Jefferson County health department.
We missed the rain today, it sprinkled here but nothing showed in my gauge, it measures to the hundredth. The forecast for today was for 3/4 inch. 2 tenths is forecast for tomorrow. It’s very fortunate we haven’t had a quarter inch since the accident.
