Landowner requests

Those dog proofs are kickin my butt. I can't get the coon to stick the hand in there and root around and set them off. I don't know what to try for bait in there to get them to paw around longer.

I used marsh mellows and sardines and they just won't dig past the trigger for some reason. They will dig the stuff out of the upper part but that's as far as they will go.

Any tips or hints any of you guys could share would be appreciated.

a trick my grandpa used to use , is a piece of shiny tin can at the back of pvc pipe , they are attracted to shiny objects , but instead of the pvc just use the trap ya got with a nice shiny piece of metal .

he would stick the piece of metal at the bottom of a pvc pipe , the hole they reached into was big enough to fit its paw in but not big enough to pull the paw back out when they had ahold of the object , and for some reason those critters wouldnt let go of thier prize until they had a 22 bullet in thier head

The only thing is there isn't a lot of room under the trigger to " Store " things. The tin foil ball might work but it would have to very small I will post up a pic of the DP trap tomorrow to show you guys what I'm talking about.

ACK took me out on his trapline a couple years ago. He caught a couple coon in dog proof traps that he had made. He used old stinky carp for bait. Just cram it down in there. I tried to use marshmellows. Didn't catch any coon. Now marshmellows are the #1 bait for a box trap.

They did work good in the live traps :D.

I might have to stock up on a few small bluegill this spring/summer to use during season this winter. I tried sardines but that didn't seem to work real well lol. See what I can do here. This is driving me crazy..nothing all week. The trail cam shows them around but just not willing to play the game lol.

I don't have trouble getting them up to it. They just won't put their paw down past the trigger and root around to trip it. I'm just not sure what to put in it to keep them feeling around in the bottom of the trap.

I had another idea hit me just a few minutes ago. I think what is going on is they are using their nails to grab and pull the bait out and not making a fist and having to tug to try and pull it up past the trigger. What I am going to try is to make something that is small enough for them to grab but large enough that they have to try and pull it past the trigger pin :D.

Like I said, I don't have a problem getting them up to it and dig around a bit but they just aren't setting off the trigger pin.

Sounds like you are filling them up covering the trigger?

Here's how I bait mine. Haven't had but one dug out with out going off.

I use groundup fish and half a big marshmellow
I put enough fish in the bottom that when I set the trap, the trigger with half a marshmellow on it just makes contact with the fish.
I think this gives them something to grab that they can put their foot around when reaching in it.
I also think just giving them a little makes them greedy and makes them want it before the others can get to it.
I don't worry about the bait freezing and locking the trigger up because it doesn't come in contact with the trigger. If the fish does get frozen in the bottom it makes them have to really dig at it. This I feel gives you a better chance of the coon setting it off

I place them right on the paths and were they come out of the buildings and barns. I will sprinkle a few pieces of fish in the path in front of the DP to try and slow them up.

Very helpful info Halfton. I will keep this in mind and see what happens :D. I don't figure where I have the traps near the barn that I can bait the trail with tid bits because the cats will nail it before the coon come out at night to play.

I did go out this morning since the trap was getting a little on the empty side yesterday when I checked it (didn't have time to bait it back up yesterday ) When I got there I had one in it that's why I posted in red up above I figured I was baiting the trap to heavy. Lesson learned lol.
